Get rid of hlstatsx
#31

Yeah I do think that the people in the top 20 are pretty much the best players on the server. I mean, the stats are flawed and may not be accurate but it's not like they're totally messed up. A person in the top 20 is very very likely to be much better than someone ranked somewhere in the 40s through 60s, but the difference between someone who's ranked 40 and someone who's ranked 80... I think the difference is very small.

That reminds me, I think the stats across all SourceOP servers shouldn't be shared. Most of the time I play on the Valve Maps #1 server and sometimes I play a little on the 24/7 2fort server, and I encounter people that are better than me but are ranked way lower... all the points seem to be on the Valve maps server.

But preferably I'd like it if there weren't any stats at all.

ehh idk there have been a lot of good things said here, but i just wanted to put in my two cents. I definitely do not think you should get rid of stats. For me, at least, i find it interesting to go and look around at stuff like what maps i die the most on, my 2nd favorite weapon, the player you've killed the most, etc. etc. And it's also cool to see the same stuff about other ppl as well. So, they should be kept.

As for teamplay, i feel that ppl are always going to turtle. Getting rid of stats is not the answer to that. Personally, if someone is dumb enough to walk by that demo who's camping in the sewers and die 4 or 5 times, then they deserve to die. However, after all it is called team FORTRESS. So turtling is inevitable. Now, obviously sometimes it goes wayy too far, but there's not really anything you can do about it. And, i also feel that DF has helped out by changing the # of points you get for flag capture. It's now something ridiculous like 50?? (or i thought it was)--so that should prod ppl to try to cap the flag.

But yes, i wouldn't mind not seeing the reminder that i just lost 25 points to that n00b who was lucky and got me =D

Recap: keep stats, but kill the automatic updates

Mmm, good points. Indeed I know speedy likes those axes, and people can find him atop the axemurderer list. That's a /fun/ statistic.

On that note, why not leave all that kind of stats intact -- who kills who the most, favorite weapons, most kills with each weapon, on each map, k/death ratios, etcetcetc... But get rid of the main stat, the overall ranking. That's what people whore for, and it really doesn't have any meaning. And besides, without that one item, all those notices on how many points you get for doing anything would just stop.

Perhaps in-game notices could be other things, like dominating/rampaging/unstoppable/killingspree/godlike/etc for getting several kills without dying. It's a good indication of who's playing well in the game.

I have no idea. I like reading the comments though. I think too many are not voicing their opinion. Get more people to sign up for the forums!

The idea I like the best is to make hlx_display default to 0 instead of 1 like it is now.

Yeah I like that too... it's definately a step forward. I don't enjoy having to type it down everytime I start up a game.

Also, I want to say that it's kind of like a coincidence that... y'know, the pros of the server that have responded all agree with what I'm sayin'... I also know `yay doesn't like stats either and he's a pro as well... I'm just sayin'... JUST LETTING YA KNOW.

Why didn't the person who created this thread put a poll asking if we (the public) wanted it or not?

I don't see the problem here. If an individual wants to spend his or her time accumulating points for the sake of rank, then let them. If their enjoyment comes from being number one on a stat board, then why take that away from them? Does it infuriate you to no end when someone enjoys flaunting about it?

How exactly does a ranking system negatively influence someones gameplay? If the goal is to be the best, then is that negative? Who is to judge what "negatively" influences the way someone plays? If I started to play differently in order to obtain a higher rank, does that I am being influenced in a negative way? If the issue here is about team play, then you'll always have people like that. I don't see this as an issue unless the individual is hacking in order to obtain a higher rank.

Personally, stats mean nothing to me since there is nothing for me to gain. I don't get pleasure from being number one on the server or having a great kd ratio, even though I may have had those at one point. Everyone may have their own reasons for playing the game, whether it's for fun or to be number one on a stat board. There will always be people who play the way they play, no matter the reason.

I'm not sure anyone is saying they feel envious or have issues with people flaunting stats. I think the issue is if or how it effects the game.

And lets be honest, in terms of the point system, risk != reward.
