Get rid of hlstatsx

Ruzbeh Wrote:You could still be an asset to your team... but you'd be a stat whore and helpful to your team, as opposed to being solely helpful to your team. That's not a good thing. Even if you're being 1% stat whore and 99% helpful, I'd prefer 100% helpful.
I'm still doing my team a great deal and playing well at the same time. This is how most people should play if they are concerned about their stats.

Ruzbeh Wrote:Statistics that aren't useful or accurate are completely useless. As opposed to a scoreboard. I mean when it says how many kills you got in a particular game... I'd say that's mighty useful. Inaccurate stats like hlstatsx have no good reason to be there at all.

I am having fun even with that ranking system, but I post here on SourceOP often to come up with suggestions and stuff to make things more fun, and I view this thread as one of those suggestions. I really do think that things would be more fun without stats. Any kind of distraction is a bad thing.
If hlstatsx were to be removed all of a sudden, then is that fair to the people who worked so hard to obtain the stats they have? Whether or not they were a help to their team, is it right to just take all they've earned away from them? What kind of justification would you have for such a removal? Think of the days some of these players spend trying to achieve the stats they have. To suddenly yank their hard work is
imprudent.

I think there have been a number of suggestions that didn't involve removing hlstatsx completely.

I liked Naquadria's idea:

"Should just have stats sent to the site where they can check them later."

And I don't get why this would have to be a discussion about any kind of uni-lateral change. But maybe just for ideas or testing.

As for the people who worked so hard obtain stats, I figure their playing the wrong game. Good stats should be a side effect of good play, but never an end in and of itself.

As a side note, in reference to Naquadria's suggestion to collect hlstatsx web stats without ingame notices: wouldn't this be a good way to increase visitors here and maybe even participation on the board?

As it is stats are totally integrated into the game experience with some people taking the time to visit the sourceop page at hlstatsx. Why not embed the stats page into the site here and let people view all the stats they want outside of the game and while visiting the site here. And god-forbid, maybe participating.

That sounds like a win-win.

I totally agree with this. I have been a fan of the SourceOP servers for quite a while now, but only found out about this site quite recently. And the only reason for that was because i was curious about my stats and decided to go digging around.

However, there has to be some sort of in-game notification, otherwise how will anyone know that the stats exist at all?

Eh.

I don't think stats are all that interesting, if any one cares at this point in the discussion. After plowing through a decent amount of people, which is fairly rare for me .. heh, then getting blown up and noticing I just lost 25 points. /shrug

Whe'ver. I've checked the stats once, at the time I was around 600. I don't anticipate getting very much higher as I don't feel my skill level is up to a lot of players here. Though, I can't say I care too much. I come here because its fun. No custom maps, default settings and a good mix of skill levels to play against. I'm rarely bored playing in the server and that's a great thing. I just checked the stats for the first time since then and it appears to be down. Can't say I care too much.

I think we all come to the server for different reasons. Some people like the stats and love to see how they are progressing in the server. I was much this mind set way back in my CS days. Used to pride myself in topping the server in odd weapon kills like the Mac-10 or 5-7. It is nice to see your name at the top and receive a little fame for it, even if its all in your head. I don't believe they are seriously damaging any team to the point where the entire team is losing because of them. If it helps your mindset, perhaps just think of them as a noob that knows no better. I would imagine anyone worried about their stats would be a higher skill level than a noob as it were anyway. A player concerned about getting a lot of kills is still a player scoring a lot of kills. I don't see how that's a bad thing.

Some times I'm not terribly in the team-playing mind set and just want to kill people ... so .. I'll soldier on and just dumb-down my mind. Sure, TF2 is about team play and all, but its still a game and it's supposed to be fun. I don't personally care about stats, but I imagine they are part of the reason the server has as many players as it does. Certainly not the only reason or maybe even a large reason ... but I can't dismiss it completely. I know there are a few that come here specifically for that reason. I enjoy killing or playing with familiar faces. If one of those people happen to be 'all about' their stats, more power to em. I would hate to see them leave if that was their reason for going to the server.

In that long ass winded post that kind of ran around in circles, I imagine setting it to not advertise the stats would be the best course of action. Would eliminate the spam and the people that don't enjoy the stats can ignore the whole issues easier. Like they say, out of sight, out of mind.

I did find it kinda funny that the weapon I got the most kills with was the syringe gun (least, when I checked the first time). Tee-hee.

I enjoy using stats like a tool for check my performance in a daily basis but much people whores much about losing point against new players. I understand that people because compare and competing is normal in other games and/or sports. Maybe making a system wich give more points to people who risk and deal more damage as some guy mentioned early work for this server, but i don't know if something like that exists.

pd: btw the stats are not working

Sorry the poor grammar

i may not be #1 or even in the top 200 on the stats board but im totally against getting rid of the stats, if you go into ANY sourceop server and just listen to people complain about stats.....what are the 2 MOST griped about issues?

#1 being that you lose 25 points a kill to some guy new to the server

#2 being people who are new complaining that they too dont have 10000 or 20000 or even 50000 points....well get over it. you cant get 20,000 points in 1 day, or 1 week without cheating in some shape or form, whether its using an aimbot or a wallhack or even having a partner to medic or engy combo with just to point whore, its all some form of cheating.

but that being said, the people who do that are small and dont even make up 5% of the people who play on sourceop, yet your letting there actions, there playing style negatively affect you and your playing style.

just because i see about 1 or more people a day who has 20,000+ points playing on sourceop and we can watch them and know that they have them because they never leave the base, well so what if thats how they want to play then let them, everyone will know that they got the points hiding behind there safe and comfortable base walls.....

leave the hlstatsx alone, let it be, make it so you cant see the points as you lose/gain them thats fine, but the stats board is not as out of wack as Ruzbeh would have us believe. you may be atop the board in game and get 400 or 500 points in 3 hours and woohoo your great and all, but you can also be at the top in game and still lose hundreds of points on hlstats....ive seen it, we all have.

my idea....leave hlstats alone, make it so you cant see the stats in game without putting in the command, but hlstats is not out of wack and i would say that its even better than the board in game, you can get 400 points on the board in game just by getting 200 headshots as sniper, i mean how out of wack is that?

people play the game how they want, its there choice, not yours to say its right or wrong, if there not cheating then where does anyone get off saying its right or wrong? they bought the game let them play how they want.

I started playing on the servers a little over a month ago. Maybe I can add some input from a new player's perspective. To give you a little background, I started playing TF2 about a week before I joined the server. I had a little FPS experience under my belt but I was pretty much a complete newbie.

Stat tracking has been an overall good experience for me. I really enjoyed watching myself improve, coming to the site and looking at all the stats it gives you. Sure there may be some negative side effects of stats but I also think there are benefits they bring that are being overlooked (besides just simply tracking overall statistics.)

-Survivability:

Again, while there are certainly negative side effects to this such as turtling and the likes, it's nice to have a penalty for death. People SHOULD care whether they live or die and all and all it makes for a better tougher game. When I was just starting out I could really care less if I got my ass handed to me when running around. Suddenly, when I saw some points drop when I died I thought to myself "oh shit, maybe I better be a little more careful and charge head long into the fray." It makes for overall smarter play which makes for better games in the long run.

-Level of play:

One of the things I love about these servers is that the majority of players kick ass. Now when I hop on random server x I can roll over a good bit of the competition (probably from playing with you guys) but again and again I keep coming back here. Why? Because I get my ass kicked and I love it. Stats give a reason for good players to be on and playing their best. Whether it be a new person trying to climb the ranks or a top player trying to maintain their rank, stat tracking brings back the people who care about doing well consistently. I come here because I can count on people playing who care about doing well and winning. You know people on both sides will be trying their damnedest to get the job done. It makes the gameplay more intense and better overall imo.

==========

Of course, hlxstats isn't without problems. Now that I've accumulated a bit of points I can see the frustration of a new player joining, violating me, draining me for 25 points a pop, and then never seeing them again.

This brings me to my next question. How customizable is hlxstats if at all? I feel that there are some general point tweaks that can solve a lot of problems instead of just removing them completely. For example, if it was possible to make it so that there was a 100-200 kill buffer before players started to accumulate stats. Anyway I don't even know how much could be done to hlxstats so I'm not going to go off on a tangent here but I will say that I agree with And1 that it would be nice if there was a way that hlxstats rewarded aggressive play for all classes (save engie maybe) and perhaps a little better point protection for people who have a ton of them.

All in all, I really enjoy the stats and I'd be sad to see them go.

I have to agree that the stats were a lot more meaningful to me when I was more noobish than I am now.

But it can't be denied that hlstatsx hooks people psychologically and keeps them coming back. They feel like they're earning something and it keeps them coming back for more.

As for the stats being customizable, they are. One of the many things you can do is set the skill mode to where the victim only loses 3/4, 1/2, or 1/4 of the points that the killer gets instead of the full 25 points and that might help with the turtling.
