Video Card update time
#1

Right now for a video card I'm running a NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT. While this was a fine card 2 years ago when i first bought my system, I think the time has come to upgrade. What is a viable card to buy within a $270 US($300 CDN) budget? Are the GeForce 9000 series worth it? Thanx for all input.

ATI 57xx / 58xx or Nvidia gtx285 for that price range. Better value currently I would say is the ATI. (I have gtx260 and love it)

Thanks.

Let me show you the one I recently purchased.

This card has blew me away, can play Crysis on the highest settings and still get an average of 40fps.

I highly recommend it. I bought it for 189 a couple of weeks of ago, it's already dropped quite a bit since then.

Thanx for the (limited) replies. The Nvidia gtx285 is a bit pricey up here in Canada. The price ranges from $350 CDN -$500 CDN. However, I won't be getting a new vid card until June so mayhaps it will drop a bit by then.

Yes, I prefer NVIDIA if only because I've bought their vid cards for so long. Any other suggestions I'd gladly like to hear about.

You might get some help from there, I'm getting a new PC in the summer and that thread has helped me out. You're likely to find some good deals on video cards there Smile

I would wait until may. Gtx480's are out on the 26'th and the prices should go down by then.

If not get a gts250 to hold you over.

I was going to wait till early June actually since that's my birthday. I forgot to mention this earlier. My power supply is a standard 250 Watt. I suppose I'll have to upgrade that as well. How much more power should I be looking for?

Ok, now that my budget is coming into focus, here are the two video cards, of which one I hope to buy in the next few weeks.

nvidia gtx 260 - $259.99
gtx 465- $339.99

I'll be buying it from Computer XS just around the corner from my house. The big question is, is the GTX 465(Fermi)really worth the extra price? Or is the 260 enough for today's modern games? It's all fine and well to say spend the extra money and get the 465, but I am married with kids so money is always tight. I'd like to think the 260 is enough but I'd gladly hear the expert advice of all you tech geeks.

*This is not me necroing a thread. I had to wait until late June/early July to pull together enough funds to upgrade my card and the time is now*
