Map voting
#21

in fact, i would go so far as to say i wish valve would not ALLOW clients to connect to modified servers...

but they did, and taking it away would be stupid now. im a huge fan of blanket control, however, and i think that modification comes with heavy prices.. specifically that it becomes difficult to control the quality of the game the user experiences.

again, not doubting that there are some well made, fun maps. but they aren't valve sanctioned, and i wont play them.

The good thing for people like you is you can easily choose to avoid modded servers. The good thing for people like me is people like you don't make the decisions. Smile

Some modifications are novel, some are pointless, some are so minor you don't really know or care, some are strictly administrative and some are simply amazing and spawn huge and dedicated followings. Kind of like Team Fortress or Counter Strike.

That said, I can't think of many TF2 maps I've played that aren't Valve made (or Valve approved?) that have ever really wow'ed me.

So I'm with you, but I'd take it down to more a matter of personal taste (and I'd be willing to be surprised; at 35 I've been wrong about a lot of things). Smile

You do realize that this is a forum for a server modification, right?

I just don't see what is fun about only playing the same 10-11 maps over and over and over again. Good 3rd party maps are the only reason this game exists, and they are essential for the full experience of the game.

I mean, I like valve maps, they are all polished and shiney, but I also get sick of having to use each class like valve wants me to in order to play effectively.

The main argument I hear about non-valve maps is that they tend to play more to some classes than others, which I find ridiculous because some classes are overpowered in the first place. Plus, tell me Lumberyard doesn't make spies useless.

I am just saying that you are the kind of person who should be playing with his 360. Don't even own a PC, get a mac. that way everything is controlled by the first-party developers and you don't have to worry about change or scary 3rd party content. everything will be "blanket controlled" so you won't have to think about your own opinions. Life is better simple.

By the way, valve sanctions all 3rd party maps.

My main concern is not having to rack up GBs of maps I will only play once in a while.

A veto would actually be nice, like for an example on [valve maps #2] if the server restarts we could skip the constant dustbowl fest and get to some of the maps that are later in the rotation that dont get played alot cuz of the bugz with that server

average custom maps are about 4 megs a peice, the largest I have seen was 12, I don't think FPS banana even has a gig of TF2 maps yet.

Just from the 15 custom maps I have in my tf2 folder, the average size is 20MB. 4MB is way too low of an average.

Also, this thread is not a discussion of map sizes.

yes but the server i play on is minimally impacted.

i can understand why you feel that way, i just don't.

notice that i never TELL you what "kind" of person you are. you should consider adopting that, because talking like that makes you sound like the Palin's of the world.

i dont play FPS on consoles. besides that, TF2 on 360 has a tiny fraction of the player base.

i work for apple. the 3rd party hardware that's released for main-marketshare PCs supports exactly what i'm saying about "customizations" ability to reduce quality control. it has nothing to do with giving up what you want, and has everything to do with wanting what you get to be as close to flawless as possible.

saying things like that is the reason i sort of hate you. (because YET AGAIN you want to argue semantics... )
