Get rid of hlstatsx
#21

I like DF's solution, but then people would constantly be asking why their stats aren't showing up. Catch TF22.

i agree with nerverot heh, you wont see me turtle in a base, i dont care if im the only one ill rush that bridge by myself if i have to or go thru the sewers by myself.....i do care about my hlstats points but at the same time im on a mission to prove you can be aggressive in game and fight the front lines and still have alot of points....

Turning the stats off or on doesn't matter. The server will be full with or without stats. The game play will not change whether you can view the stats in-game or not. People play a certain way and that's it.

As long as the server is always full I'm happy.

Sure, but the stats do impact the way people play. Everyone is affected by it. Some positively, some negatively, but without a doubt mostly negatively.

Stats are a distraction.

as i said people always play that way as long as there is a score board
honestly some of us like the sats just to see how we stack up, that dosen't mean our game play is based on it

Should just have stats sent to the site where they can check them later.

The scoreboard and the stats are two seperate things... if you're high on the scoreboard in-game, it means you're good and you're doing good for the team... if you're higly ranked with the stats, it doesn't mean shit. If you have two people of equal skill, and you have one person playing a lot of TF2, and the other playing not so much TF2, you'll see the person who plays a lot more ranked a lot higher.

That's another problem these stats bring. Not only does it screw with the game, the stats aren't accurate at all. If you play a lot and play carefully so you don't die often, you'll gain points in the rankings very quickly. Hlstatsx is flawed. The in-game scoreboard is actually useful. The stats aren't.

i dunno, but i like hlstats, ya you do have quite a few people who turtle and i could rattle off at least a dozen players i have seen that have alot of points who NEVER leave the damn base....

that is just annoying, i mean your not helping your team by hiding in the base not even if your an engy because a good engy will push forward, build on the bridge or in enemy sewers on the 2fort map...

i agree with naquadria, and drunken make it so you cant see the stats unless you do a command but im not for getting rid of them, has to be some way to keep track of stats outside of the crap valve has.

i wish that hlstats kept a history of the people you killed, your weapon use and so on for longer than 28 days, i believe its set by the hlstatsx premium subscriber based upon how much strain you want to put on the server itself with the more days you add. Drunken can correct me if im wrong on that.

if there was a better service than hlstatsx then fine but there isnt so you can only go with what you got.

I do fully agree with everything Ruzbeh says. And yeah, the point system is good but needs serious tweaking.

Generally the more killing you're doing the better because you're keeping enemies in their spawn. Don't be so quick to assume someone is stat-whoring because someone is playing very cautiously. Most pubbers play very recklessly which give the 'stat-whores' easy pickins.

I do notice an interesting correlation. The higher in rank the better intelligence, experience, and motor skills a player has. You can tell by spectating other players. Top 20 players 90% of time are better than players ranked 50-70th (with equal time spent playing).

Has anyone else had these exact same debates in other FPS games before? It's funny. In all FPS games I've played shitloads of hours (Call of duty series, CS:S, ETQW) all the lower caliber players whined about stat whores, yet the higher skilled players kept silent. CRY SOME MOAR.

I do agree they should be turned off by default. But people love their stats. Any competition game (sports) you can read tremendous amounts of information about players by comparing numbers.

I do not like how statsX ranks by TOTAL POINTS. Official ETQW does that too, and they never reset them. So whoever plays the most looks the best. But all the real stat whores would download the detailed .xls files and sort by stuff like XP/hr, daily, etc.

I like ETQW battlesense category XP chart:
Taking damage only 0.25 points
Dealing damage only 0.5 points
Killing something but not taking damage 1.0 point
Taking AND dealing damage 1.25 points
Killing something AND taking damage 2.0 points

Like ETQW, TF2 should reward you more for being more aggressive. You get a full 2 points (like every 45 seconds) if you killed somebody AND took damage.
But Turtlers™ (you know who you are) will camp their sentries way back for cheap kills and low deaths. They shouldn't be rewarded as highly as people fighting the front lines doing all the work.

I love reading the stats, but I'm also one of the most aggressive players I know. Which means I'm not afraid to die. I'm ranked 5th.
