You could have replaced carth with a nagging wife and the game would not change a bit.

Don't you have to be like 13 to register on a website in accordance to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act of 1998?

that's true. He's also the least interesting character in the whole game. I hate how bioware always a generic character in their games: eg Jacob in ME2, Kaidan in ME1, Alistair in Dragon Age

Allistar was hardly generic. In-fact Allistar was one of my favorites. It's not that Carth was generic or didn't have anything interesting about him it was that Carth was a complete asshole.

How dare they have a relatively stable human being who exhibits decent judgement most of the time and isn't wildly eccentric in some way, completely ruins the immersion.

Jacob is the most generic character in ME2. The only thing going for him is that he's black, but otherwise I don't think it would be possible to create a more boring character. If I wanted perfect realism, then yeah he's the sort of person that would probably be on the crew of a spaceship. But he's hardly a compelling character in terms of the narrative. Games/movies/books/etc are allowed to take liberties with realism in order to create more interesting stories- and they should.
