As someone who's worked on a Service Desk for years now and has been promoted (and is being let go because my company is leaving the US for various reasons of fail), I've learned a few things:
1. Every desk is a drama desk. Work hard, create little drama and be innovative (e.g. do good things management doesn't expect outside of your daily responsibilities, like creating a tool to reduce incidents or time to resolve incidents) and you'll be noticed. Caveat:
1.a. There are two types of desks. The touchy-feely each employee has a voice desk, and the technical, everyone here is here to work not to cry because I can't get the schedule I want and the guy next to me is loud desk. In the former, technical aptitude won't get you anywhere, ass-kissing will. It's a bad scene. The later is the better of the two as being great at your job and going above and beyond as mentioned in point one will get you promoted, or recommended for a position outside the department. Gauge your workplace appropriately.
2. People who work in a call center/help desk/service desk in any one position for more than 3 years tend to go insane. Not just that, but Management of that center/desk tends to stop looking at you for promotion. Getting out of the desk is your only option if this is the case.
2.a. A desk/center is a gateway into the rest of IT. If you can't get promoted out, or get an interview out, use the job as a means of getting certifications to forward your career (ie - just go for the paycheck and use free time at work to study).
3. No matter where you want to get promoted, the "new hotness" in IT can be found in ITIL certification, and/or HDI certifications.

Take this with a grain of salt as every company is different.

I didn't know you lived in AZ! A few of my friends were let go from the DHL software support center they had around here, i really feel for you. At Apple we are switching over to FedEx and it has been a nightmare.

I've been really trying to put myself out in management's eyesight at work, constantly answering questions from other agents in our group chat, writing up articles for our Knowledge Base, and submitting improvements to tools. I've also been trying to be generally nicer to everyone, saying Hi when i come in in the morning and being social during my breaks.

The center just opened a few months ago (it is a test site and may not even exist come May) and im still very excited about working there, but I know what you mean (so does bookie, who with a bachelors degree stayed with 2wire support for over 3 years without a raise or promotion off the floor)

I've been really trying to better myself between calls and at home, im leaning python right now as a start, and trying to study for certs. Ideally Id like to get a job doing linux sysadmin stuff... if you have anything you can point me to in the form of training/resources

still pretty depressing though, ill let you guys know how it turns out

update:

well, i guess i can stop hating the people i work with. at first i was really mad because two MORE people who werent me made leads this week. i was pulled aside and told discretely that our center was not up for contract re-signing, but a select few people were being told in advanced. i was given a requisition number to apply at the company im currently contracted to work for. the position is for a home based agent, so i would be given an imac so i could vpn into work.

so i guess im getting better then a promotion - im getting hired permanently and getting benefits and discounts and work from home and a pay raise.

yay?!
