I don't know, man. All the patches that have been released seem to be fixing bugs and gameplay inbalances that were around since day one. Sulla has a very thorough breakdown of "what went wrong" in Civ 5. A lot of it applies to people that are much better at the game than I am, but many of points were things I noticed on my first or second game.
While I would love to see a proper expansion pack to the game, there just seem to be too many fundamental flaws with it to make it worth saving. Then again, I heard Civ 4 was neigh-unplayable on release, but after the expansions it grew in great game. I only picked it up on Steam last summer, so I missed playing the "vanilla" release. Maybe there's hope for Civ 5, too?
