I can't even remember what they were called, but back in 2007-2008, they had these... T-things.... and you could read them for video updates, just plain tagging, word games, shit like that.

Everybody should use Firefox and the Stylish Addon. You can make your own style sheets to use ontop of the websites existing one, so you can modify how it looks. Not sure if anyone has released anything that fixes the new Youtube yet. But if you know CSS its not too difficult to do a few tweaks to fix a few things.
