Turning with Chargin Targe - exploit or not?
#1

Just wanted to know if using scripts or alternate controllers to be able turn with the Chargin Targe is considered an exploit or is it allowed. I observed someone on the server doing this a few days ago and didn't know if it was kosher or not. I'd have reported it, but it was an admin doing it so it would have been kind of pointless. For reference by what I mean by turning since I know you're able to angle slightly at the end of a charge, this is for sharp 90 degree turns around corners:

turning around a tight corner (fast turn) is an exploit. (as in your provided video)

The slow gradual curve isn't.

both are scripted, but the fast turn requires something that is considered a exploit. The slow curve is the previous fast turn script, which valve has limited on its turn speed.. after that some ppl found another way to still do fast turns, and this one was never addressed, but as valve intended it to be a slow turn after finding out ppl could turn, its considered a exploit to be able to fast turn.

Thanks ipples and bininis, but I'm asking more specifically for the SourceOP servers. I'd like to know DF's position on it so that I know if I should report it when I see it in the future.

Yes it is an exploit that i'm pretty sure DF enforces, you could report people for it but unless they were serious offenders I doubt they would get anything more than a warning.

I was a commando you know.

exploit seeing as how valve already attempted to fix it

Quote:Capped the turn rate from +left and +right while charging.

obviously they failed hard at it, thus a unpatched exploit

it was me, i'm the one norbule is talking about.

i did it with this, which is a slightly modified version of a couple of the scripts found in the gotfrag thread:

cl_yawspeed -350
alias "+charge" "+attack2; bind a +right; bind d +left"
alias "-charge" " -attack2; bind a +moveleft; bind d +moveright; -left; -right"
alias chargetoggle "usecharge"
alias usecharge "bind mouse2 +charge; alias chargetoggle useattack"
alias useattack "bind mouse2 +attack2; alias chargetoggle usecharge"
bind rctrl "chargetoggle"

In the gotfrag thread I said it was cheating. After thinking about it, I don't think it is.

If some nerd is using an Xbox controller to play the game, then he can do this without any type of script. He wouldn't be cheating, as it isn't something he can control. If he can do it, why shouldn't I be able to? When valve capped the +left and +right commands they still gave an advantage to anyone using those commands while charging. This script does basically the same thing, the only difference is the yawspeed value, which valve has capped positively at 210. So even after valve "patched" the old scripts, they still left them completely useable and effective

Besides, you're not lookign at the bigger picture here: when you use the targe, you give up your sticky launcher. I was BARELY breaking even in my k/d ratio when I was doing this, and I'd say 90% of the kills I got were from pipes anyway. More often than not, it got me killed, and I suspect it would get most other players killed too. Let's face it: none of us are SolidSnake.

As far as how DF sees it, I actually asked him about the script specifically about a week ago. I asked, "should I be banning for this?" To which he essentially said "meh, maybe ask them to stop." I dunno about you, but to me that seemed like apathy concerning its use. Since then I've seen a number of people using it in the server. The charge is still vulnerable to the same types of weaknesses: airblast completely screws you up, natascha destroys you, any rocket blast stops you dead, and ramps still send you flying. Not to mention, sometimes the script breaks and you get stuck moving right or left.

I think the only admin who would actually legitimately be upset about this is Hell-met since he got killed by it once and threw a fit. That being said, If the people here decide that it's cheatmode and not grayareamode I'll stop. The "for" arguments and the "against" arguments are best sumed up in the gotfrag thread though.

Keep in mind Snarf doesn't fucking count.

The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State.

I didn't get killed by it, otherwise I wouldn't have banned the wrong person. Doho.

It's an exploit and valve acknowledges it (they just suck at actually doing anything properly), deal with it.

Saying "oh but you give up stickylauncher and airblast counters it" is idiotic and has nothing to do with the issue. (Oh remember when medics could infinitely be invulnerable? Yeah that was no problem because pyros could pin them down!!)

DF isn't a good example since he doesn't care about anything more than the daily playercounts

Don't you know anything? If everyone else is cheating I should cheat too.

I don't mind people being able to turn with the targe most of the time, the only time it pisses me off is when i'm a medic with like 90 percent charge and some demo charges towards me and I run around a corner, he turns and cuts my head off in one hit.
