We just do the old take a screen shot of the desktop, delete all of the shortcuts and make it their wallpaper thing when we are bored.

Or instead of being a dick and wiping out all their shortcuts you could simply right click the desktop slide over view and unclick show desktop icons.

Unless you were on an older mac and deleting a shortcut to a CD drive or removable device uninstalled it.
