#71

iduno what to really say, but LONG LIVE SOURCEOP :|
OK??? Sorry oh god...
My favorite server, changing donator would maybe help because most of my friends who have tried to join get kicked as soon as vip idk Sad I wouldn't mind paying like 5 a month or whatever ETC
Sorry for late reply btw! been meaning to post on here for a while but i've been too nervous hehe. I just want to help though.

As a 2fort (instant spawn) regular, I'd hate to see anything happen to this particular map. If there is anything I can do to help please let me know =)

I just started playing again, have been gone a long time. The first night I came back I hopped on to find a bunch of kids doing the "Lets all play spies" crap in team voice chat and I left. I joined again a couple of nights ago and it was better in that regard. I dunno which is the norm these days.

I have not played all of the newer maps but it is my opinion that 32 players is too many for most of the maps. I think a max of 24 would be better. Do not let people vote nextmap or else you'll end up on hightower every other map. Pick the best 7-8 standard maps (no gimmicks like that melee only castle crap) and rotate. If you want custom maps make a custom map server but keep the main one as valve maps/no mods/no bs.

Enforcer is a good guy and the only name I reckognized from the old days and would make a great mod.

I would just like to chime in to remind all of you that you are gay.
[SIZE=1]Also this thread has been made a thousand times. Changing the map rotation is nothing more than a band-aid.

Well, I'm late to the party. I'm going to go against the grain of most of the regulars, because I think their solutions are designed to entice the old regulars to play on the Valve 1 server again. The problem to me isn't the old timers not playing, the problem is that the server doesn't entice new players to come and stay there. Adding new admins isn't going to help, the majority of the players right now are the people who have been here and know the rules. You'll need new admins if and when an influx of new players start to join the server.

So to that point, I'm against the idea of custom maps being added to the rotation. That's a solution designed for the regulars who are tired of the same maps. I don't think new players want to join a server or change maps and start downloading. I may be wrong about this, but that's just something I've seen from personal experience when a full server drops to around half full when it switched to a custom map.

I like some of Fusion's ideas, but those seem like they can only be done by someone in control of the server. With DF busy at Valve, who is the admin of the server who configures the server? Wasn't it supposed to be someone from the Nemu servers, or did that not work out? The lack of an active person in charge of the server is what seems to hurt it the most. If that is what people are nominating Enforcer for, well good luck with that.

If there was someone who could make changes to the server, then here are some suggestions:

1. Dynamic map rotation - I don't even know if this is possible, but a rotation that would have separate pools of maps that changed based on the amount of people on the server. So if the server gets low on population, the server would switch to maps that tend to attract random new people to the server ie dustbowl, badwater, goldrush. Then as more people joined, the server rotation would increase to include more advanced maps like 5cp maps or steel.

2. More robust map voting - Already been suggested multiple times. RTV, nominations, increasing the amount of maps to vote for. As far as more maps to choose from, something I liked on another server is that each choice was a type of map. So you'd have a CP A/D map, a PL map, a 5CP map, a KOTH map, and a CTF map to choose from. Because if a new person joins because it's on a type of map, he's more likely to stay if the server changes to another map of the same type. Also, limit nominations so you can't nominate a map that was recently played.

3. Adjust time limits/win round conditions/autoscramble - Shorten the time limit on maps to 20-25 minutes and add an option in the vote to extend the map if people want to stay on it. Fusion already mentioned cutting down the number of wins needed to change maps. I'd also like the idea of autoscramble based on how fast a team wins or if there's a significant point differential in the round between teams. The autoscramble could also be a vote that pops up if the conditions are met that asks if the players want one.

Lastly, this one is for the community that is still around. I'll be blunt, we suck as a community at welcoming new players. This is pretty much self evidenced by the fact that the server is dying or already dead. Maybe I'm just seeing this through rose colored glasses, but I remember when the server had people who were playing to have fun, regardless of winning or losing. Now it feels like the mentality has adjusted over time to winning at all costs and working on getting more stat points. This mentality creates scenarios where people join the team that has more regulars on it or the team with a friend that will pocket medic them or vice versa and then steam roll their way to points. New players join, get rolled constantly and say 'screw this' and leave for a more friendly server. This is something we could correct, but we choose not to and that is why we now have a server mainly filled with regulars and not enough new people to sustain it for more than a few hours.

There are other perks and status symbol type things that could be added that other servers do that would also attract new people, but I can't speak to those since I never cared about that type of stuff.

Note, this applies to the Valve 1 server, I don't play on the other servers. I will say that the other servers also need a more active person in charge of the server who can respond to community feedback in a timely fashion.

(Wow this post went long.)

Jill is supposed to be the one handling all server changes, but 1) he's impossible to get in touch with, and 2) won't do much without checking with DF who is also sometimes hard to get in contact with.

All of the changes that need to be made can only happen through those two.
I discussed a lot of this stuff with DF a week or two ago; some of it is very difficult to do, some of it is not a good idea, and some of it he sounded enthusiastic about.

where this goes from here is up to him

as for regulars welcomign new players, maybe it would be best if you guys stopped encouraging stupid activities in general (pocketing melee heavies/ pocketing ibby) and dropping a lot of the obnoxious mic spam that happens when some people get drunk. I cant be there to gag everyone all the time

The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State.

Here's the reasons why I have stopped playing on SourceOP and moved to a Skial server. I am willing to come back but you really need to make a server with some more features that more popular servers are using.

1. Reserved slots. Everytime I try to join it's already full with regulars and reserved slots. I have to pay 5/month to Skial to keep my reserved slot which I have been doing for the last 6 months. Here are the features I get with a reserved slot
  • Reserved slot to server - I have never had to wait in queue for this server since it's a monthly subscription
  • Any special hat effect - I can turn on any hat effect with a simple command
  • Invincible on round end
  • Some other special things // Being able to spawn the golden trophy, type in special colors if wanted, start votes quicker then regular

2. Server votes, we can vote to turn all-talk on which is a very cool feature since this is not a hardcore server or matches

3. Fast acting admins, whenever there has been an issue you can open a ticket through the chat system which populates to their web forum and gets addressed almost immediately by forum moderators. You really need to get some admins that can help this server out. It is pretty unbelievable that you have had been playing in this server for 5+ years and can not trust to give them simple admin rights such as swapping maps or kicking/muting people.

I'm willing to come back but you need to bring some more features that people pay extra for to join up.

**Editing Post to add a question**

The server I currently play in is a 32 slot server just like sourceop. HOWEVER.... when numbers of players on the server drops to a certain level, the server auto switches to a 24 slot server, thus making it eligible for the quick join feature which brings a lot of people in (I Believe, I'm not sure) Is there a way we can implement this into SourceOP thus keeping the server full?

One post asked why the Gold Rush server died.

Two reasons why the server stopped populating. The first is prior to the massive tf2 server update the Gold Rush server suffered from horrible lag spikes. I attempted to work with DF on fixing this but he never saw anything on the server side with his admin tools that indicated a problem. However, every day regulars would constantly complain of lag issues. We filled the server last night for the first time since the update and I am pleased to announce that everything runs smoothly. I will attempt to fill the server and hopefully we will see it repopulated.

The second reason was highlander. Most regulars moved onto highlander as it was a step up in competition. This didn't kill the server immediately but less presence from regulars ones more incentive for others to stop coming.

The good news is all the old regulars are still friends. The community still exists. So why not exist and play on sourceop?

We have a few challenges though. The chief being finding new blood! The reserve slot system has to change. We have dedicated regulars who can fill the servers but once they are full and regulars use their reserve slots (the ones that have been active FOREVER) then that is less opportunity for new players to join. Worse the way our system is setup it gives little incentive for continued donations. I honestly don't know how DF is paying for the servers if they cost $700 a month and he receives $100 or less in donations.

I will offer up more suggestions and recommendations after tonight.

only servers alive are 2fort servers, which are cancer, with ppl that get a hard-on for unusual hats (just like this forum!)
