The Current state of the servers
#51

I have been playing SourceOP since before anyone I'm pretty sure. I remember the days when it wasn't just an OKCupid server for all these sorry sods to get e-laid while exchanging hats for feigned affection and nudie pics. I remember the days when it was a place for the community to come together and giggle at Hankey's mispronunciations of common english words and dog breeds. In conclusion, Enforcer for admin/mod/prime minister/pastor/. And don't remove random crits, beaver needs to know how to lose. Thank you and God bless.

Yes to:

New maps/rotation
Removal of crap maps
Enforcer as admin
Better voting system
Class limits on spy and sniper (2/2) (More than that is just stupid, but it happens, a lot. Like the game I just left. No medics, but 6 spy-per's....)
Removal of random critz (Valve added a Kritzkrieg, buff banner, and piss in a jar, there is no need for random critz at this stage of the game.)

As to the reserve slots, I'd rather they just go if anything. I don't have a lot of money and though I'd love to be able to support the community in this way (Monthly donations) I can't justify it budget wise. If I lose my slot, I'd probably just go elsewhere to play because I understand why new people don't like coming here, being kicked for a reserve slot sucks! That's why I bought one. I think removing them and going to a first come first server model is a better idea. Give people who donate other incentives, some examples already given.

I have issues with the game itself but they'll never be addressed. I'm just hoping the server issues will be.

I've been a SOP valve server regular for almost 3 years. I would like to see some changes to the map selection in regards to adding custom payload maps and giving the community the power to decide what what maps to play using a voting system on the server.

thanksCool

I Play on this server for at least the 3 last year, encounter a lot of STEAM friends, that now i play many others games. I wish this could continue.

A more present admins (more than one) would likely improve the server life. Not only for discpline the undisciplined players, but also to see how we can improve the server dynamic.

Better maps choice would likely help. We dont need to put hundread of new maps, but we could have some maps on trial for maybe a month, then find a way to people to vote for the maps they would like on servers as a regular map. This would help to add new maps and make users decide wiche one they prefere. The voting systems should be improved. I know there some servers with a better voting system, as there a vote for a list of map then it go by tours, until the maps is decided. It take no more than 5 min for this. the choice then is not limited to 2 maps, AND prevent to have the same maps order all the time. I can almost know what map will be at what time!

There plenty of map that should be considered but i will not make a list here, there already lot of people on that forum topic that did it. I could suggest however to have a flavor of the month type event. Once a month a specific map would be added to the server if there enough map. I remeber TFC there was Xmas map version etc. There was plenty of map on TFC, i would think that by now there plenty of map fro TF2 since 2007. We could look for TFC classic map, made for TF2 and see of people like them. The thing is not only that some map could sux, it is also that some map are overplayed.

There 4 servers that i know for now, 2 are 24/7 2Fort/Goldrush, and 2 various map server. the #1 is the one most of us play, when it is not empty. #2 is almost always empty and i dont see why it is not shut down. For obscure reason, the 24/7 servers have always people in it, and using my slot, i can enter at any time (this server is even full at 0800AM in week end time). I could suggest to merge the Goldrush and 2 fort 24/7 in one server, alternating the maps. this would let the server 1, as the #2 could be closed (serioulsy i never saw that server with players in it in the last 2 year) this would let others non community player join the #1 server and help to fill it.

Slot. for me the good side of the slot is once i am the server, i cant be kicked out. That actually the main reason why i bought one 3 year ago. 16 slot used and you still have to lineup. If there reducing OR completely cancel those slot would help to fill server? i am not sure due to the fact that even when we are not in, there no player in it (non slot players). Actually Enforcer and few other, including me are the one filling the server in evening time (North America East coast time) then once it is full, it is for a few hours. So for the Slot i dont know what would be the best option, but for sure, at this point it would not change the fact that server is empty 80% of the time.

Another thing we should look, is what make some TF2 server successfull: their maps, their options, voting system, and others stuff that improve people to play in it.

I have observed a tendency in the last few years, and not directly related to the server issue, but as an overall PC internet gaming behaviours. I remeber back when game where complex and hard to complete, we were happy to see a cutscene and we were rushing to complete the game. Today most game are made to be easy and with minimum of effort. TF2 seem to go that way too. That crates fest make me perplex how this game is going. Are we going soo lazy as a society than even in virtual world we have to have it soo easy? There also the drama issue, and this is not only in our server but in my connexe L4D community (and former TF2). Talking to people, there seem this is now the norm, even in WoW.... It is a matter of time before there are a reality TV show on this.

There was my 2 cent. I wish this community continue, but whatever happen, the good point is that Steam friend is there to keep contact with all of you.

I don’t think I’ve ever posted here before but … since I’ve met a lot of nice people on the server and had fun over the past 3 or 4 years, I hate to see the server die. I laughed when I saw D A McCoy’s post as it was funny and so true. I haven’t played there in a month but if the server improves, maybe the old regulars will come back or new people will join.

All it takes are a few people who act badly on a server to kill it so first of all, it needs some good admins. Without a doubt, Enforcer should be an admin assuming he would be willing. Womb Raider,I don’t know why you show such resistance to having Enforcer or any new admins but Sourceop needs more admins. Enforcer is well liked and just as important – he is respected. I don’t know who really has ultimate authority on the running of the server right now but perhaps someone should observe what the current admins are doing; such as Fusion and his buddy running around with melee weapons which can cause others to disconnect. Sorry Fusion, I’ve never had a problem with you and you seem to be popular with the regulars but that’s not right for an admin to do that.

I paid one time for a reserved slot so feel lucky to have had one and only had to pay one time. However, other servers do require small monthly fees for a reserved slot with other features such as end of round invulnerability, colored text, in-game hats, end of round voting for next maps, etc. As it is now, it’s meaningless since there’s only a 2-3 hour window when the server is full and everyone has a reserved slot. Consider doing as other servers (which are always full) do.

As far as new maps, ask for map suggestions and consolidate the list. Then allow people to rank the current maps and the proposed new maps. Try out the top 15-20 maps in the rotation and adjust as needed based on popularity. In the future, try out new maps periodically and add to the rotation if people like it.

As I mentioned earlier, there’s a lot of nice people on the server and I’ve never personally had a problem with anyone. For the current admins, I’m not trying to bash you in this post but just trying to state the facts as I see it. I understand it’s difficult to be an admin because no matter what you do, someone will always be unhappy about it. I’m thankful for anyone who’s willing to be an admin and police the server Smile

Did I also mention to vote for Enforcer for president .... err admin I mean Big Grin

It is sad because i remember a time when the servers used to be full 24/7. It was so convienant to know that nearly anytime you'd go on you could have a great game with some awesome folks. I'm not sure what caused this other than the lack of updates and changes. Others (especially Dopp) have shown their frustration towards this decline. For the longevity of this servers lifespan we need to keep things fresh, new, and fun.

I remember a time when DF would do this, i remember when we didn't have a voting system, among other things. We need that, when someone has a complaint, an idea, it needs to be heard! I strongly vote for a new admin that will gain access to the server files. I have been told a lot of admins do not have the knowledge needed for server side stuff. I did hear that Fusion has some knowledge and i wouldn't mind one bit for fusion to take over so we can keep this server alive.

If needed we can also drop some other servers as they don't even get populated ever. SourceOP valve maps #1 needs to be our main focus here.

I also agree with adding some new maps, i know it's always went against the original idea of the server but it's been so many years now i don't think it would hurt to add them in. Keep all the original maps and add in a ton of customs as well. Also add a better voting system, where you can choose any of the next 5 maps and hit a button (F1 through F5) to vote for it. The first to a certain number of votes becomes the new map!

As far as someone seriously going out of their way to keep this server alive, Enforcer has done a hell of a job, I would vote for him as well to be the main community admin for the server, he has more hours than anyone else on the server and he has always been polite and would be willing to help anyway he can im sure.

Also concerning the reserved slots, seriously, just do away with them, nearly every regular has one and even mild regulars have them from one donation years ago. There's almost no point to having them anymore. I say take them away until a monthly pay system is established.

Please no! F1-F5 works better.

Nothing worse than needing to change a weapon right when the vote comes up. *dead*

I hear that. I edited my original post. Also the vote system im referring to is on all of Valve's CS:GO servers (where i got the idea) i think it would make a great addition to valve maps 1. Also if 2 or 3 maps have the exact same amount of votes a randomizer picks between the tie.

Really glad to see all this support and all sorts of ideas to help better the servers. Warms my cold Canadian Heart! Fantastic initiative and I can't wait to start seeing this stuff being implemented.

We'll start off with figuring out new maps for now. What do you guys suggest?

We could try and start out with a top 5 and then add some more to the rotation if there is sufficient demand!

Ohhhh also, suggestions as to what to remove!

Use the following format please:

Ibby

Add:

1. Swiftwater
2. Snakewater
3. Process
4. Follower
5. Croissant

Remove:

1. Hoodoo
2. Junction
3. Hydro

Replace:

1. Turbine with turbine_pro
2. Viaduct with viaduct_pro
3. Coldfront with warmfront

It's not really anything the server has done, its the fact that as more and more updates come out, the dumber the game becomes. To me the game became awful after the demo/soldier update, once that hit i really had no interest in the game anymore. Look at some of the classic old school shooters (counter strike and Wolfenstien ET is a great example). Most of those games almost never receive an update, which is not necessary a good thing, but is not also a bad thing.

To me TF2 is no longer an FPS, but an MMOFPS.

You need to make Enforcer an admin, why this wasn't done a couple years ago is at this point pathetic. Game316 should also be on that list of Admins.
Removing maps is fine, but what made the server great to me was the lack of random ass mods(RTD, donor benefits, etc).
