#1

PROBABLY the wrong section, please tell me if so

Hi, my laptop has been overheating alot lately, since i bought Garry's mod (GMOD) which was at a night before, that one hour it ran perfectly before i went to bed, the next day it started to overheat/get very hot at the bottom, i have no idea what could cause this problem, since i could play TF2 even though it wen't hot sometimes, Here's my specs:

My Laptop is a Acer ASPIRE 5750G
  • Intel® Core™ i7-2630QM 2GHz with Turbo Boost Up to 2.9GHz
  • NVIDIA® GeForce® GT 540M, Up to 1760MB TurboCache™
  • 15.6 HD LED LCD
  • DVD-Super Multi DL drive
  • 6 GB DDR3 Memory
  • Acer Nplify™802.11b/g/n
  • 640 GB HDD
  • 6-cell Li-ion battery

I'd appreciate if anybody would peek in and take a look and try to help me sort out this problem Smile

Thanks.

Do you need to clean dust from it? Is the bottom where the cooling fans are? Is the bottom on a flat surface where it can't get proper circulation?

What makes you think its over heating? It is common for laptops to get too warm to keep on you lap.

Is it crashing? Does it stutter and run like half the frames per second?

If you dont notice any performance change or errors then Id say the high temperature is with in normal operating range.

He probably put it best. As long as there's no performance problems, the laptop should be fine. If it really bothers you, try getting a laptop cooling pad/fan. They're relatively inexpensive. (Don't get the really cheap ones under $15 though.)

I would also look at the processes it is running. Extra processes require more CPU time and thus power. This generates extra heat which you are experiencing. Go to task bar and right click then open task manager. Select the processes tab at the top and then watch what is running. Steam and the HL2 will be using alot when active. Windows explorer will show as "explorer.exe" and will be using around 70 K of memory. Firefox has become quite a hog lately and mine is hovering around 170 K depending on how many tabs open. I can't really give specifics here because I don't know everything you have installed on your system. I look at CPU and Memory usage in task manager to start to zero in on suspect processes. Make sure you know what you are killing here as a wrong move will force a reboot; permanent changes are difficult to make in task manager. To do that you would have to edit the boot file....

Hello.

Here are a few suggestions:

Bebopkmk stated that applications utilizing your CPU can cause more heat. To that end, I'd like to add that many computer viruses like to utilize your CPU as much as possible. It wouldn't be a bad idea to run a virus scan.

I don't know how long ago you last updated your graphics driver, but a while back Nvidia actually released a driver that caused the GPU heatsink fan to not spin up as much as is needed and caused a number of people's GPUs to burn out. I suggest you download and install the lastest Nvidia driver to make sure you aren't running with that bad release. Don't download whatever horribly outdated version Acer offers. Go to Nvidia's website and download the latest stable release. Nvidia's releases don't officially support laptop GPUs, but you can force it. Simply install the driver, then go into the device manager and change the driver to the GeForce GT 540. I've known a number of people that do this without problems. If this sounds scary, just post here the version number of the driver you are currently running, and the version number of the latest release from Acer and I'll do some digging with Google and archive.org to see if either of those is that bad release.

I see your CPU has "turbo boost." If you can disable that feature, it should help reduce the heat.

I hope this helps.

I've had the exact same notebook as you and the games were stuttering due to faulty laptop.

Back to the topic, best idea is to clean out the dry from the vents with compressed air. Also, tilt your notebook up slightly when it's hot to allow more air to go into the notebook.

Dont leave it running on your best or any soft, surfaces likes bed sheets.
