Discussion about forum move
#21

Irish Wrote:Tapatalk takes allot of the loading out of the forum for phone users. Instead of rendering a site it only shows the threads. All the splash is out making it a true just "type" forum on the phone and not a webpage.

The bump function IMO wouldn't be no different than the guys that wait 2 hours every 2 hours just bump with a smiley post. I'm almost completely sure in the admin portal you can tell the forum how long it takes before a poster could actually bump their thread. Here I would expect 2 hours and then their "bump" button would be visible to them. Only the thread starter can bump the thread unless someone posts to it during the course of the day.

I hear you about the SR forums. Takes forever for the reply to come back. I still think the link is fine....Your just going to have to wait a bit for that page to render. Yes link only. The tag can be seen once your on their site. No need to link the tag info.

I had a few forums in the past. Vbulletin is nice because if you have the cash they can help maintain a site. When I used phpBB forums in the past you can get help from help forums but to get someone to actually do the maintenance you would have to find someone and not only pay them but give them full control of your site to upgrade and make changes. At least with vbulletin they are employees of vbulletin. Less likely to nuke your site.

Tapatalk may be useful since you put it that way. My only concern would be how much effort it takes to set up versus how many people are viewing via mobile device. (Easy to figure out when using analytics.)

Yea a simple link or image like on the forums will work great, and requires no additional resources to load the page unless someone actually clicks the link to go offsite.

vBulletin is nice, but with forums this large, and especially when thinks get customized you don't allow anyone to touch anything. Especially when you are coding at DF's caliber. I'm just glad to see the forums being updated, and I can only hope that the extra effort to add the "more up to date" stuff for the forums happens, it would be a shame if they don't find there way into the new forums.

I misunderstood your BUMP strategy. Yes if you as the poster could click a button that says BUMP (similiar to EDIT) on your own thread and it would bump without an additional post of the word BUMP or a smiley face it would be of great help also. One of the major complaints most people have is that 50% or more of the posts are simply the word BUMP.

EDIT: After re-reading a few things, and seeing a most recent post from Butane pointing a person towards the SOP FAQ when asking if his name could be changed (short answer NO)...

It doesn't appear that Steam Login will be used on the new forum because if so you also wouldn't have to option to change your password which was previously stated as being needed once the new forums are up and running.

Correct me if I am wrong please.

There won't be Steam login to start, but most likely it'll be added in the future.

There is a mobile-friendly theme.

Could you explain what you liked about the old ones better? Was it the color scheme, the features, the layout, what?

To be truthful, I don't like this new format. I liked the old format better. It's just frustrating because nothing feels like it grabs my attention, and that's really bad for people who want to buy and sell because it makes it all the more difficult for those to click on those topics. I don't want this to become another dead forum where people post and no one looks at anything. This is THE main forum where people come to trade, and as such, the look overall should be more inviting. As it is right now, this board just feels dull.

Also, how the heck do I search my old posts on this forum? I can't seem to find an option for that anywhere.

The Old Forums were just so old school , it was really nice , the new ones have better features & stuff but it just doesn't feel right.

the layout mainly. Also, i can't really tell if a thread has a new reply or not--the old forums it was obvious, here not so much--note im also partially colorblind, so that doesnt necessarily help :/

On a side note, I fucking love your avatar Dragenyious

There's a theme picker at the bottom left of the page. Try the vBulletin default one and see if you like it better. Let me know.
