I do agree the color scheme is a bit neutral and does not really stand out. I feel the same way about not being able to immediately notice new threads having not been read. Also, it is part mental. We are not yet use to these new features so it is going to feel different. Maybe give it some time?

Don't really find the difference all that noticeable.
Also, i kinda like the mobile one atm--quite easy to tell which threads have a new post.

how the fuck can you say these are neutral when we just came from a white and off white forum
The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State.

i don't know, maybe because they really are neutral colors? Here's a neutral color chart. All the forum colors can be found on this chart.
With the od forums, the indicators are yellow/orange which is a big contrast from white and off white. Here, it's gray for no new threads and blueish gray for new threads, all over a gray and blueish gray background. Even the white is really a light gray.

What are these envelopes next to the topic names? Also, even if you tell us to select a new theme and it supposedly does help, how do you think that's going to help people that are just coming to the site? They shouldn't have to figure out a theme just to make the site appeal better to them. The site should already be appealing from the get go, just like the old sourceop was. Changing the theme still didn't help topics feel that noticable anyways...

I understand, but if you try the default theme and come back and say that it's much better because XYZ then we all have a better idea of what you think the problem is.

Well the closest I can find to the old sourceop format that looks the best is the default mobile style. I'm saying mobile style when you're looking at the topics because that's the closest you can really get to the look of the old forums. I think it would be better if you somehow had a format like the mobile theme but not have the text stretched across the screen, like how you see the posts now. I'd like if the posts were kind of like the old forums in which the posts were condensed in the middle, while you had options to the left of the screen where you could go to other parts of the forum, check your account, etc. I dont like the red, green and plain envelopes next to the topics either. If you have the envelopes that are next to the topics small and not have any color, imo, I think that would be good.

Nobody ever likes change, but overall it is a much better system.
Initially I thought, oh my, it certainly is a lot different seeing a full page (wide) layout here at SourceOp.
Secondly, I know I'm biased because of how much time spent working on my own forums with Bo0m's help, but I recently resigned completely. So don't take this as any type of advertisement or affiliation.
Things I can think of that would dramatically increase the appeal would be:
Adding TF2 Topic Icons
Adding TF2 Class Emblem Thread Icons
Making the new and read threads easy to tell apart.
Then for the future once you get steam logins complete consider adding the players avatar, and +Player Info.
