Lots of vending machines have computers, actually Id say most do now. You can actually get into a diagnostic menu by pressing the drink buttons in a certain order. Tells you stuff like how much money the machine ought to have in it.
As for taking pics, always interested me but this is a good read:

If anyone cares, if you have a coke machine that you want to mess with and nobody's around, think of the buttons on the side as working in descending order(meaning 1 is the top). Enter in 4,2,3,1, and you should be greeted by a menu. Doesn't work on all of them but it works on a good number.
