Buying electronics in China?
#11

http://www.dealextreme.com

This website comes in handy when you need to buy devices and components where excessive quality isn't really something you need (like things that are hard to fuck up, cables and whatnot).

Almost everything on there is shit, but it's cheap shit, and when shit works it's pretty much the place to go. Also free shipping.

If you're going to be in china and want to pick up electronics anyway then your only bet is to know basic inner workings of the things you're buying. Know which things they're going to skimp on for price, and which things function well on low grade parts. For instance if you want an MP3 player, pick one out that doesn't have all of the perks like a color screen or fancy features, because the screen and the CPU are the first two things that are going to be cheesed in. If you're buying a cell phone or tablet go for an android device that has the latest OS on it because you're never going to see a service pack, make sure it has a capacitive touch screen with a good resolution, that the processor is suitable for what you're using it for and that the memory isn't fucking awful. Also they might lie about the specs in person, I don't know. Don't be an idiot.

Basically the easier it is to make, the better chance it's not going to fuck up.

The best things to pick up there are batteries. Be it for your existing devices, or external batteries that charge things off of USB. The expensive component on these is the actual battery, but they're easy to produce and the accompanying electronics are negligibly cheap. You can generally find a backup USB battery that retails in the states for like 70-150$ for about 15-30$ and functions identically. For internal device batteries you can generally pick up spare cell phone batteries for your specific device for 2-10$.

I go to China sometimes, if you're a foreigner, they WILL swindle you. But, they ARE willing to negotiate if you're Chinese. Very racist country, but a lot of culture.

they will smile and be super friendly while they steal from you and you won't know any better. then when you leave they will laugh hysterically at how much money they just made off the ignorant tourist

Womb is right most chinese are like that, they'll compliment you and they'll use some repetitive phrase like "YOU BUY NAO HANDSOME MAN VELLY CHEEP VELLY GOOD YES!"

But all in seriousness if you were to buy somewhere it should be in Hong Kong as their price/quality is pretty good in my opinion.

The lie can be maintained only for such time as the State can shield the people from the political, economic and/or military consequences of the lie. It thus becomes vitally important for the State to use all of its powers to repress dissent, for the truth is the mortal enemy of the lie, and thus by extension, the truth becomes the greatest enemy of the State.

Ive never been to china let alone outside of the US. However I am a member of another forum that is laser related hence the avatar. I speak for myself and most people on the forum that most Chinese (not all because there are some REALLY great Chinese people who are trying to make an honest living) WILL try to pull the wool over your eyes and take whatever they can.

We get Chinese people who come on our forum and spam ad's to items that probably dont even exist and when you place an order you get nothing and end up having to file a charge back with your bank/paypal. Luckily most of us on that forum are not idiots and we usually make them PROVE they are honest and legit people because they are so shady!

So I can only imagine what a tourist in china would be like. My suggestion would be to know what you are looking for and if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

China is very over populated too so its not that Chinese people are all racist or swindlers, they just do what they need to do to make money and feed their families. Nothing people in other countries haven't done. The only difference is in china there is a lot less regulation and with all the people its harder to regulate things.

Just my 2¢

Just go to Hong Kong, its way better than Shanghai.

I know a place that has a whole bunch of computer stores, they wont rip you off for sure. Shanghai? I have been there many times. If you dont know chinese, you are riding a taxi... they will just driving in big loops and takes you a lot more time to get there.
