Building a computer...

I hope i'm posting in the correct section, sorry if i'm not.

Anyway, i'm looking to build a computer and spend under $900 on the comp itself. This excludes the monitor, keyboard, mouse, ect.

The parts I've been looking at would be these

Processor
Intel I5-2500k

Graphics card
Sapphire Radeon HD 6850

Motherboard
ASUS P8P67

Power supply
Corsair HX650

Ram
Corsair vengeance 8gb

Hard drive
Seagate Barracuda 1.5tb 5900rpm Not to sure about this one. It looks as though most of the prices on HDD's are higher than they were a month or two ago.

Edit: Thanks for the warning on this I shall look for another option.

DVD drive
Asus 24x dvd burner

Case
Cooler Master Elite 430

Operating system
I was looking to install windows 7 although i'm not to keen on paying $200 for it so if anyone knows where it can be found for say $110 or less that would be appreciated.

I will probably end up buying most of the parts off amazon considering some are cheaper there and I won't be charged state sales tax or shipping as I would be on Newegg

I'm looking for any feedback on the whole system really, i'd like to build something that can run newer games on high if not the highest settings and get a playable fps, I do understand within the budget this may not be possible. Something that can be upgraded fairly easily as well if necessary. I may also be interested in overclocking once i better understand it.

If you can, I might shell out a bit more for a GTX 560 Ti.

That power supply is definitely nice, but you could probably go with something cheaper. Up to you.

The company I buy all my PC equipment from said that this only affects Western Digital hard drives and not other manufacturers. Regardless, it'll still temporarily raise the price of HDD's across the board.

Vis-à-vis the OS, I actually bought my License key through a third party vendor who claimed to have obtained the keys directly from microsoft. Anyway, the key worked perfectly (I was doubtful of it working at all) and it only cost me £49.99 ~ $75. It was Windows 7 Ultimate for the record.

Ahh that would explain the prices being so much higher, thanks for that bit and to be honest i'd not looked much at the Nvidia cards, but now i shall.

Torrent the OS. The product key is the license, so technically its legit.

I was trying to stay away from that all together, but thanks this sounds like it'll all work great, now I just need to find a website selling the license keys.

Everything is good but the memory and the hard drive.

Seagates are generally to be avoided, so it's worth paying the extra money for the WD or a Samsung.

There's the exact same for 10$ less for no reason other than that it's blue. It'll match your motherboard better, also.

You can probably squeeze some more power out of the GPU for what you're paying, but that's about it.

I would still get a nvidia because you get evga precision and limited lifetime warranties with their cards. Honestly if you were careful with a nvidia card you could probably have the investment last 4-5 years possibly more if you swap out the fans on them every now and then. Also yes get a WD instead of a seagate if you can help it. Trust me when I tell you seagate has awful service as far as delivery goes.
The last external HDD I sent into seagate came back with a huge crack down the spine that wasn't there before. As well as the fact that the HDD was still fucking broken. Then they made me pay an extra 20 dollars to ship it out to them again to fix their mistake.

I know for a fact that universities sell Win7 Ultimate for 70-90 dollars. Try finding a hook up on that level.

Thanks for the info, i'll definitely stay away from Seagate, and as suggested look for a Western Digital or Samsung HDD. Also what would be a suggested GPU at a similar price that would be more powerful? I did look at the GTX 560 ti's but they're close to another $100 which is a tad much extra.

Huh, i'll look into that, luckily although i'm not enrolled in collage and am still a few years short of that, the father of one of my friends is the art professor at a local university.
