Friend of mine pre-ordered a hard copy, and it arrived earlier today.
When he went to install it, it took him straight to Steam, which told him he had to wait until it's released to even install the game. I can understand not being able to launch the game or something, but not being able to even install it is kinda lame.
He could always preload it if they are offering that. I don't see the big deal if he has a box copy.

Last university lesson right now, then a bus trip of one hour. Skyrim is waiting at home. I am so excited.
I think I'll wait for it to be heavily modded so I don't do an acrobatic fucking pirouette off the handle because of how Bethesda likes to shit all over their games by releasing them half-done.

Can someone report back on what the game is like, I'm contemplating buying it. Played Oblivion and loved it. However, if the game in its current form is riddled with bugs and glitches, I think I'll wait until they're ironed out.
You people really worry too much about bugs and glitches. Rarely do I find a triple a release that has anything game breaking. Sure there are exceptions but I think bethesda is competent enough that they wouldn't release a half-baked chicken. And even then anything too bad would be modded/patched out quickly.

Like when oblivion would currupt all of your saves, and a bunch of the VITAL QUEST NPC's would fail to spawn or their AI was so buggy that it would make you reload the game for the quest scripts to run?

Have you ever played a Bethseda game? Every release since TES: Arena has been buggy and broken at launch(and up until Morrowind, they stayed buggy forever; I still pray for a patch to fix Daggerfall). The fact this launch is going as smoothly as it is- mind blowing.Originally Posted by Snarf

Sandbox games in general have a lot of bugs. It's the nature of the beast.
I can't speak for oblivion because I didn't get it on launch but fallout 3 on I have been playing them on launch and encountering very little to none as far as game breaking bugs go. The arms could still use some work though as far as camera work goes. They look very... odd right now. But from what I have experienced the game overall has improved a lot since oblivion launched.
