I was wondering if you could get Bsod (blue screen of death) by a Dos attack because I got bsod today and I was just wanting to
know if someone is dos'ing me or whether its because of a software or hardware issue.

Believe it or not, the contents of the message on the blue screen are actually helpful. Almost every blue screen issue ever is a driver issue and it's usually the video driver. This could indicate a hardware problem, but not always.

Depends also on the OS.

windows XP:
BSOD's for any driver

Vista / 7:
Chipset drivers, sometimes video (others no longer in ring 0)
If a driver crashes on 7, you may see a CTD (crash to desktop) by the game.

In regards to hardware:
- Too low powered PSU (or an older PC with a bit low-ish PSU that decayed below the required needed Watt's)
- Videocard overheating, this can be CTD, can be BSOD, depends on the driver and severity
- Memory, test your memory with memtest86+ running overnight
- Hard disk, deteriorating disk damaging key files on the OS.
- CPU, most times overheating, cos of dust piled up in the cooling block.

In regards to cleaning that CPU block DO NOT USE THE VACUUM CLEANER and let the fan turn on amazing speed, there is still a coil there, and it will generate power, damaging your motherboard or the fan itself. If you must, don't let it turn around for "fun", cos that fun will cost you either a new CPU cooling fan (block), or a new motherboard.

Yeah well the problem is that im on a laptop, so I'm leaning towards it being an overheated graphics card (I'm not using my laptop as much now) and once it popped up i accidently turned of my laptop once it finished installing the packets in fear. It has not come up since so I think I'm ok.

Keep your laptop on a cooling pad, if you get a black screen instead of a blue screen you're in trouble.

Thanks for the tip. I was going to get one, but since im not going to game on it anymore until I get a PC (not laptop) I thought what was the use.

black screen = off or reset.

No, if your screen suddenly goes black without the computer turning off it means your gpu has overheated(and possibly damaged itself). Or if you are getting artifacts(Strange static colors on screen) the memory on the card may be bad or the gpu may be overheating.
It depends on the laptop but even if I wasn't going to use it for games I would probably still get a cooling pad, but it all depends on how hot it gets when being used.
