The reason the repair node was scrapped is engineers shouldn't be able to defend their gear while they are away. Leaving your base is supposed to be a risk.

Sorry forgot engineers were supposed to run around instead of humping their sentry like a slower version of the scout. Maybe next we can revive the battle medic.
