what is with the gamespy? I mean, why would they bother when they could have just used steam...

Because it's also available for PC through brick and mortar stores as well as online retailers that aren't associated with Steam in any way.
I guess they wanted everyone to use the same system.

just register a gamespy account/ID. no extra software/apps

in fact, it was painless to register the ID from within the game menu. they really made it as unobtrusive as i think they could.


as an update, ive been playing through single player w/ siren. lvl18 now, got a crazy fast repeater for my main weapon, and hugely powerful magnum and snipe. the guns are awesome.
