Did you check what your sound settings were set to in-game (speakers, headset, etc) and then switch it and switch back?

Ex. You want speakers so switch to headset and then back to speakers.

I had a bug like that before and that fixed it. Maybe worth a try. *shrug*

    Try some isolation troubleshooting:

    Does this issue persists:
In a new User Account on your OS?
    *Sound in Steam?
    *Sound in TF2?
On another computer, with your Steam Account in Tf2?
On this computer, with another Steam Account in Tf2?
On another Steam game that takes advantage of MSS?
*Try other HL2 Games, or if you have it, ANNO 1404 or GTA3

With TF2 Open (in your UA, with your Steam account) Type in console:
    "snd_restart"
    "volume 1"

Please repost your results for all tests you are able to complete, in addition to some more information.

Do you get sound on the "movie" before each map?
Do you get sound on the title screen of TF2?
What output method are you using? Headphones? Speakers?
Has your EXACT current setup (OS, Drivers, TF2/Steam Installation, Sound Hardware) been exactly the same since it WAS working? If not, what have you changed?
Do you get any error dialogues during your troubleshooting? what is the exact text?

    Gather some system logs:
Run DXDiag on your OS, save the results to a .txt and post them to pastbin.com and put the URL in your followup.
