How does one start doing 6s?

I have been wanting to break into the comp scene, but don't know where to start first. For those of you that have made the transition from Pub to Pro, how did you start? What first steps did you make? Is there a site that helps hook you up with other potential players for scrims?

I want to play medic, but don't want to play team lead.

    Thanks for any info!

    join STD.

put "looking" w/out quotes on the end of your name, and then play a lot of PUGs lots of comp people gravitate to those
and as medic, you'll probably eventually have to play team leader..

Be on the main tf2 menu and tab out

    Download IRC

    join #tf2.gather.us

type !vent when you get into the channel to get the vent info

    join vent

type !add when you see that a game comes up

Copy the connect info from vent when it tells you what server you're playing on

When the teams fill up, join the team vent you are on in the server.

Bring up console, paste the connect info.

Join the team you are on.

Congrats, you just joined a pug.

Classes are first come first serve, and last person usually gets stuck with medic, so you are in luck, you will get to play a lot of medic.

adder has it, except don't take those gathers too seriously, as they are nigh garbage.

play as much of it as possible, low teams are always looking and you can grow from there....good luck

It's under the Gamesurge server, which is the default server for my IRC client. I admit to having little-to-no understanding of the intricacies of IRC.

You also have to be good at talking on your mic and communicating properly! Sadly for me, talking while playing tf2 feels like talking to a brick wall, so I've had to refuse loads of offers from teams.

I have no problem communicating, and understand that it's a medic's natural role in 6s to be shot caller, but I'm still relatively green at the entire situation.
