I hate SATA and Windows XP

I have a MB from about 4 years ago. About the time SATA tech came out. I bought a new HDD because the old one had a bad SMART and was going to crash any day.

I spent the last 2 days trying to get the damn thing to work. In my attempt to get my drives in order my external HDD was formatted.

I lost about 3 years worth of files that are gone. All my work files are gone.

As a result I did get the damn SATA drive with a new copy of XP installed on my computer but now I have two blank HDD's.

I await the flaming from all of you.

You can recover files you know... windows format/delete is pretty terrible. I myself formatted my external drive due to it being plugged into my pc when I went to format it. Got most of it back after researching file recovery methods. Wish I could remember the one I used, but it was a long time ago.

Yeah, well my external drive was the size of the pc drive I was going to install windows on. And I had no idea it was plugged in.

Not sure how you managed that, but you can get in some cases get it back. As long as you haven't touched the drive since, you should be able to get some data back.

If you're lucky, you can get the whole MFT from the old format which will point to your files which should be mostly intact (for example, the new MFT might have stomped on some of your files). You will definitely be able to get SOMETHING back. There are plenty of crappy programs out there that will be able to get word documents and jpgs and stuff off a drive because it can scan the entire drive for things that look like files. If the files are contiguous, it can pull them off.

As long as you're not writing to the drive, there should be no harm in trying whatever file recovery programs you want.

    Some resources:
    http://www.diskinternals.com/ntfs-recovery/
    http://www.google.com/search?&q=ntfs+unformat
    http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=ntfs+file+recovery

Let me know which works best for you. I'm curious to know. Maybe look into sending it to a data recovery place? They prolly know how to get you stuff back better than anyone else.

Those things are like 800$ per hard drive.

I do truly hope that Vesed isn't actually USING the hard drive in question...
