As with scamming, it's less about the amount and more about the spirit the deal is done.

I would like to hear from the other guy with the 3 buds. Ok, cuz I have had people approach me with their lower-priced unusuals. I will be in a server like buying unusuals for 1 bud 1 bill. So ofcourse some guy hits me with a solidly 3 bud hat. Oh will you take this? Ok. He asks, "Is this a good price to sell it at"? I tell him, well that my friend is up to you. It is up to you to decide what you will accept for your unusual. You can always ask around or maybe google, though sometimes the prices are outdated. Granted you may get more but that takes time, hanging out for many hours and bumping trades on tf2tp and the outpost. And well like a few other people I have encountered, they are ok with trading for a bit less so they dont have to wait around for more. Some people just want something they want and like playing the game, and could give a shit about trading. Granted, I try not to go past the 50% mark cuz well I try to sleep well at night and dont need to ruin my rep. That being said, some people do consent to a trade for less. I think lying or deceiving or offering something thats essentially garbage is wrong (I think the hard line has to be less than 25% of true avg value of item) , but I think you should ask the person if they were ok with what transpired, cuz some people really aren't looking to get "the most" out of an unusual or what not. I had with an unusual handle sell me one cheap cuz he just was tired of waiting for no offers and the mockery of having an ugly handy handle. What should I say, NO, u cant thats a 2 bud hat, I can not give you this 1 bud? I think the community needs to formalize a definition AND also ask said "victim" if they would still do trade after learning real value. Do keep in mind that time is money. Sorry for wall of text, enter button not working. TL;DR verision: Would person still consent to trade if learning true value? Standard sharking definition needed.

sharking is not getting a good deal or a lowball. Don't get it twisted. You're allowed to pay less than best price for a hat =/ The community doesn't have a problem with that

Searching for people that don't trade and know values and abusing that lack of knowledge is wrong. Paying 50% of an items worth is fine if the seller knows it's worth. If the buyer informs the seller of the true value before making your offer, that's fine.

The problems begin is when the buyer says things like "I don't know what it's worth" when they clearly do. That's just an example, things can be much worse than that and it's rarely black and white. Avoiding the truth is basically lying and should be treated as such. Just because you omit facts, it doesn't mean you're doing the right thing.

I think you all know this anyway.

    1. The right thing to do is go 'you can probably get more than 1 from someone', or go 'Actually thats a nice hat, I'll give you 2 for it'.
    2. If it's too good to be true, it usually is.

Well, really to avoid all this craziness should be a disclaimer on trade servers thats if someone wants to sell something, they should first look up the price and then "confirm" said price with someone unrelated and ideally someone with more than 1 promo worth of stuff.

Secondly, I think sometimes without creative marketing or persistance, I'm not sure you can always get 2 out of it. If you have a heavy unusual that isn't a capo or hound dog, it can be a chore and a half to find the "right" person to buy your thing. If you're not searching on tf2tp, looking for matches on the outpost, bumping your trades, hitting the servers hard and posting on forums, well sometimes ur not gonna get 3. I always count time as part of my equation. Yes, anyone can sit back and get great offers on a KE, not so much on a decent effect puglist. I got 1.5 here and will put in the long effort of trying to squeeze more.

Really, if someone wants to "do the right thing" then I suggest an unusual spreadsheet. I tried this actually with AJ of the blogspot site it was just too damn daunting, especially since prices are SO fluid. Lastly, maybe another disclaimer about not relying on a buyer to price check YOUR unususal. I mean, like going to a yard sale and I see a Picasso and then he says you think its good? Not sure what i'd do over, but for pettie lil amounts like 2 or 3 digits usually, eh no thanks. A million dollars ....eh id, i'd have to ask the wife.. Though I think the point is searching out for said picasso owners and lying about price.More clearly wrong. Ah, very subtle

"sharking is not getting a good deal or a lowball. Don't get it twisted. You're allowed to pay less than best price for a hat =/ The community doesn't have a problem with that Smile

I do actually like the way that is stated. I for the record dont search blackeneds lil site. I usually trade on the web, where by then they usually are mostly aware of value. Granted I usually try to just squeeze a few additional keys or a bills 95% of the time out a 4 bud hat, but eh. I just know that valve needs to be involved more in the community. .

If someone knew that they'd be banned from steam for life over an infraction, I think atleast some would act right

Valve will never allow the community any offical power other than the power of suggestion (which they've been pretty great at from start to now). Especially with cash trading. Admitting unusuals or ingame items have cash value would mean that the key + crate system is gambling and most likely mean there'll be restrictions on selling them (which would be near impossible because true age verification online is a pita).

It sucks but that's what we have to deal with and therefore have to trust SR and community admins.

Steam are stepping in to some extent though. They're trade banning and even disabling accounts so it's really worth reporting a scam to steam if you're the victim. These are rare, but it's still worth the effort on the chance the fuckers do get some sort of official punishment from valve.

You have to be realistic in your expectations of a company like valve. They're a hell of a lot better than most game companies when it comes to community service.

Valve needs a dedicated scam support team, otherwise I hear stories about scammers who scam, then get scammed by the victim, then go cry to support and get the item that they scammed and got scammed from them duped for themselves... scammer still profits a community luger, GG Valve. They obviously must have known a grey market was bound to popup looking at examples of WoW and RS, I have no clue why they drag their feet on such issues.

    Proof they don't do enough.

    /endrage.
