From an ATI standpoint 6770's are less powerful than the 6850's.
That's true but they're 150$+ USD (160ish for most of them on Newegg) right now. It really depends on how much your willing to pay for the next level of longevity. That said, if you do go out of the x700 range try to stick to xx50 & xx70+ cards. I've never had a good card under the xx50 series.
