After re-reading OPs post. I think the overall point/feel he is trying to convey is "why spend xx.xx on hats when you could do this to get them" instead. It appears to be simple genuine advice to save people $$.
However, I doubt that there is not some sort of chip on his shoulder that others have the available capital to spend on hats and he doesnt, thus he is trying to change the overall hat market mentality.
Each person is different, thus the value of said items as well as the amount of disposable captial will be different to each.
While I could never bring myself to spend cash on hats (in that manner), I do buy 2-4 keys a week to play with crates. I think I like the gamble associated with it...
