I do fully agree with everything Ruzbeh says. And yeah, the point system is good but needs serious tweaking.
Generally the more killing you're doing the better because you're keeping enemies in their spawn. Don't be so quick to assume someone is stat-whoring because someone is playing very cautiously. Most pubbers play very recklessly which give the 'stat-whores' easy pickins.
I do notice an interesting correlation. The higher in rank the better intelligence, experience, and motor skills a player has. You can tell by spectating other players. Top 20 players 90% of time are better than players ranked 50-70th (with equal time spent playing).
Has anyone else had these exact same debates in other FPS games before? It's funny. In all FPS games I've played shitloads of hours (Call of duty series, CS:S, ETQW) all the lower caliber players whined about stat whores, yet the higher skilled players kept silent. CRY SOME MOAR.
I do agree they should be turned off by default. But people love their stats. Any competition game (sports) you can read tremendous amounts of information about players by comparing numbers.
I do not like how statsX ranks by TOTAL POINTS. Official ETQW does that too, and they never reset them. So whoever plays the most looks the best. But all the real stat whores would download the detailed .xls files and sort by stuff like XP/hr, daily, etc.
I like ETQW battlesense category XP chart:
Taking damage only 0.25 points
Dealing damage only 0.5 points
Killing something but not taking damage 1.0 point
Taking AND dealing damage 1.25 points
Killing something AND taking damage 2.0 points
Like ETQW, TF2 should reward you more for being more aggressive. You get a full 2 points (like every 45 seconds) if you killed somebody AND took damage.
But Turtlers™ (you know who you are) will camp their sentries way back for cheap kills and low deaths. They shouldn't be rewarded as highly as people fighting the front lines doing all the work.
I love reading the stats, but I'm also one of the most aggressive players I know. Which means I'm not afraid to die. I'm ranked 5th.
