"Economic relations between Canada and the US are of paramount importance to Canada. The US is Canada's most important trading partner (Canada exports 30% of its gross domestic product and almost 70% of Canadian exports are to the US) and the US has provided Canada with much of its investment capital and TECHNOLOGY through FOREIGN INVESTMENT, resulting in a high level of US ownership and control of the Canadian ECONOMY."
Basically, without the US, the Canadian economy collapses, then unemployment rates skyrocket. So, while the US is (without a doubt) a complete hot mess, CAN is reliant on the US for survival.
Canadian buisness people know the above best. That's why they wince when Canadian politicians/media jump on the 'Let's bash the US' wagon. The US has a high interest in keeping Canada secure and happy so Canada doesn't become a launching ground for terrorist raids into the US like the St. Albans raid 1864.
Personally, I think the US treats us rather well. I mean, no other country on the planet(except maybe Britain) would have such a cordial bilateral relationship with us. Our common language, culture, history, entertainment gives us a lot to work with.
