Do you have a wireless? If so then the cause might easily be any electronics in your house, a simple use of a microwave oven will fuck your signal up and cause hell of a ping spikes. If it isn't also too secure with easy password or no password someone might also be leeching it.
Not wireless?
check the current state of your wire, if it has nasty scratches in it you might lose network everynow and then which might appear as just ping spikes. Check that its proberly plugged in at both sides, if it is even slightly loose it might do the same above.
Major updates going on for other games or programs? Or even on antivirus or windows? Thise can be gigantic ping killers obviously. Some antiviruses update daily on certain times so this might be one cause.
Someone downloading anything at all? Torrenting something? etc..
Very obvious causes. If someone who is sharing your net downloads anything at all it will spike the ping. This also includes Youtube videos.
Storms around your place? Or the ISP company having trouble? Major storms can knock down internet providers every now and then just like they do for the electrizity. ISP provider can sometimes also have some downtimes and repairs going on, so I suggest you check your ISP providers site for news/call them if the problems ensue.
Viruses? Very nasty cause, a simple trojan that have sneaked in will make your internet go crazy. Though unlikely, you might still want to check just incase if nothing else resolves it.
