I realized awhile back that moving my mouse in a circular path was producing a flat oval unless set to a specific setting (which upon inspection was indeed the 6/11 tick as stated in that article). I never knew why it did that.
I believe a good mouse is one of the most important pieces of hardware. Get a USB laser mouse with the highest report rates possible. I do not like mouse smoothing. I do like low acceleration but can never fine tune it right in TF2. Keeping it off is better than using a setting that feels unnatural.
Also, a cheap keyboard doesn't always perform well for games that require several keys to be pressed simultaneously. If you experience a lot of ghost or stuck keys, consider getting a good gaming keyboard.
