In fact less than 10% of violent crimes in the united states involve a gun. You're statistically 10 times more likely to be beaten with a hammer than even be threatened with a gun.

In the USA, the annual murder rate by guns is 13 times higher than in Germany and 44 times higher than in England and Wales.[1] The Guardian says that, and they are pretty conservative.
