It's important to note that "religion" by definition and "Christianity" are two separate things- meaning Christianity is one type of religion; one of many types.
Additionally, there are many types of Christianity. Roman Catholics, Eastern Orthodox, Protestant, Anglican/Episcopalian, Amish, Baptists, Lutheran, Presbyterian and Seventh-Day Adventists are all considered denominations of Christianity and each has its own unique set of beliefs and practices.
Protestant Christianity alone has hundreds, if not thousands, of different denominations under it. A 2002 study by Pew Research Council found over 53% of Americans consider themselves Protestant. There are over 500 million Protestants in the world, each of them with varying beliefs.
To clump all "Christians" or even all "religious people" together as one is ignorant.
This post isn't to debate whether or not God is real, or Christianity is true but instead to point out that assuming all people who call themselves "Christian" can be clumped into one definition of the word is naive and inaccurate.
There are many different types of Christians and one shouldn't automatically assume things about a person just because they claim to be Christian, just as you shouldn't make assumptions regarding a person who claims to be homosexual.
Not all Christians are against homosexuals. (http://www.religioustolerance.org/hom_chri.htm)
Not all Christians are against science. (http://www.christianity.co.nz/science.htm)
Some scientists believe God and Evolution can co-exist (http://www.livescience.com/culture/08111...ution.html)
Some Christians believe the Bible talks about dinosaurs. (http://www.clarifyingchristianity.com/dinos.shtml)
Religion (including Christianity) is man-made. (http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/religion)
Judging Christianity as a whole based on the beliefs or actions of one particular Christian or denomination of Christians is biased, inaccurate and shows your closed-mindedness and ignorance on the topic.
Every individual must make his or her own choice about what to believe or not believe.
I'm not asking you to believe. I am asking you not to clump all believers into the mold you have of what Christians must be. If you want to know how a Christian feels about a specific topic (such as gay marriage), ask them.
Ask that individual alone. Don't assume that their answer applies to anyone else, regardless of religious affiliation.
We are all unique with different life experiences and individual opinions and attitudes- whether you believe in God or not.
