Oddly enough the smoker is my favorite of the 3 'normal' boss zombies. On the last part of No Mercy, I was able to disable 3 of the 4 survivors by pulling one off the roof and the other 2 jumped to heal him. Sadly the drop sapped ones health and the other fell off the side of the building.

The boomer is the most effective, least in my eyes, as it gives the hunters and smokers a chance to do something without getting one shot by a team of 4 auto shotgun users.
