I buy $100+ in keys, and don't get a single unusual. My friend unboxes his first crate and gets an unusual gentlemen's gatsby. No words.

I got an unusual sometime during december after only 20 keys. But it was a fly fedora. So no more crate opening for me.

I unoxed like 30 crates but i wasn't looking for an unusual, i wanted stranges and then traded for the stranges i wanted with the extras or got metal. I really can't see the appeal though of opening crates for unusuals as most hats look blah and alot of the effects are blah... even the ones that are popular.
What i did was spend 11 buds on the exact hat and effect i wanted. A circling hearts troublemakers tosslecap and couldn't be happier. I also had a circling hearts tricorne which i didn't want and i ended up trading that for a bud and a sunbeams industrial festiver which i think looks neat on engy.
All in all i think it's best just to find your favourite hat and effect and buy it straight out.
Unless of course you get a rush from opening crates and seeing that unusual picture pop up and if thats the case i hate to break it to anyone who fits that category but your a gambler and a problem gambler as well if you cant really afford it.

I love how you all assume these people are buying 1000$ worth of keys at a time, just because they spent it, doesn't mean they spent it all at once. And so what? They have the cash to spend, more power to them. And if nobody unboxed, where would the new unusuals come from? this thread is so full of righteous douchebaggery.

Exactly, I just buy keys every once in a while to open up the crates I have. I haven't gotten an unusual yet, but I'll stop once I do. I don't do it because I'm a gambler or anything, I just want to see what it's like. Uncrating is a part of the game and I'd like to experience it.

Oh uncrating is gambling, and its not a big part of the game, but it is fun, and if you have extra cash, why not support the game, if nobody buys anything, how will tf2 survive? keys are the biggest source of income from this game, without them, tf2 might not get all the attention it deserves, or worse, shut down.

Shooting and murdering people is part of the game, uncrating is more like gambling.
