question regarding client/server performance
#1

I am not one to go running around yelling lag every time my ISP throws a hiccup or what not, but I have noticed some performance issues the last week or so. My ping used to hold steady at around 70-80, but goes anywhere from 70 - 390 at any given time causing client stutters and up to 3 sec client freezes at times. I have jumped on to the IO servers occasionally during the same week mostly so my son could play a bit and I did not experience these issues. This would tend to rule out my ISP. There was another thread where data center issues were mentioned, are they related?

If you can, when your connection is lagging, run a traceroute to the IP address of the server you're having these issues on. Then take a screencap of your results and post them here.

If you're running windows xp, this is how you do it.
Start -> Run -> type in cmd -> click OK -> copy and paste this: tracert 67.228.59.145 -> then hit enter.
You can replace that IP with the one you're having issues on, just don't include the port ":27015"

Noted. Thanks for the advice. After an hour on tonight, the ping seems to have evened out a bit so far.

It happens the server lags every now and then(since it has 32 players alllll the time that would explain it). even a genuis like drunken fool cannot make the perfect server... or can he?

Chrissy, the fact that it's 32 players has nothing to do with it. It's probably a network issue somewhere between his ISP and the datacenter which is why Biggs suggested to do a tracert.

then why does the server occasionaly lag like such?(i know its not just me when it happens to EVERYONE and everyone stutters.) and by 32 players i meant the fact that its constantly stressed with max players(32) every day.

You are not directly connected to the server you are playing on. Your connection probably passes through 10 different networks before it reaches the server itself. If any of those hops have a latency issue or if you drop some packets somewhere, you experience what you know as lag. And if multiple people are connecting through a network near the server and it is having issues, then multiple people can experience the same lag.

Run a tracert and you will see for yourself.

sigh...no the server itself lags i doubt my connection has anything to do with it when the whole server goes to a standstill and everyone screams in caps LAG. unless my router is somehow lagging EVERYONE on the server without the pings going up. or that everyone is simply lagging at the same time coincidently and the fact that pipebombs rockets and such freeze midair has nothing to do with lag then yes its my side.

I dont know how far your patience is willing to extend Biggs, but *golfclap* for the effort so far.

When the whole server lags, no, your connection probably has nothing to do with it. However, the whole server lagging was not hyden's problem.
