from all the ff games I played, I only remember one thing
sephiroth or-whatever-one-of-the-endbosses-name-was's ultimate attack which consisted of seeing all the planets getting destroyed by beams of lights
an attack which he kept spamming and took so long I eventually made myself some sandwiches

FF6 (in us thats FF3) is by far the best in the series. It's fangirls/boys that crave Sephiroth that made #7 more popular. I've played the final fantasy series up to ffx. After seeing the release of ffx2 and so forth, I lost intrest. Ah and classic rpgs have been so much better than current rpgs for the most part.
Breath of Fire 1&2, Lufia 1&2, Final Fantasy 3, Fallout 1&2, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, Chrono Trigger, Balders Gate and their elk define the RPG genre for me. No number of shitty Oblivion, Fallout ripoff and cg Final fantasy games can change that for me. The exceptions are few and far between.

Breath of Fire was way too 'guide dang it' but I agree with the rest of that list.

10 pissed me off the most, Tidus was such a whiny bitch.
The story was cool. Most of the Square Enix games have at least 1 whiny bitch character. FF10 had Tidus, Last Remnant had Rush, Star Ocean 4 had Faize, and so on.
Wont even go into FFX-2 though, that was just terrible.

I never played X-2, it looked too terrible to warrant a purchase.
I'm not saying 10 was bad, it was just my least favorite.

Hey, Half-Duplex...kudos and well put.
I'm torn between X and VII as far as which one I like the most. X was a little too easy and although I haven't played VII in forever, I did thoroughly enjoy it. VIII had potential, but they should have kept the materia system--the "pokemon" system sucked.
I have to admit that if they ever updated/re-released VII for the PS3, I would finally break down and buy a PS3.
Right now, I'm just looking forward to the new MechWarrior.

I agree with these. I'm surprised someone hasn't mentioned Earthbound yet.

Earthbound does need to be noted as well. SNES was truly the golden age for RPGs.

I found almost all of the FF protagonists to be near-intolerable. Cloud is tied with Tidus for the worst, followed closely by Squall for being a whiny pissant the entire game. Anybody who yells "I will not be talked about in passed tense!" in the middle of someone else's conversation and then runs off to cry is unforgivable.
Also Half-Duplex, it states in the ORIGINAL ffvii that Cloud was an infantryman, he never made it into any class of SOLDIER and the only reason he had the uniform was because Zack felt the need to play dress-up with his near-comatose body while they were in the mansion.

And this is the truth, I'd go as far to say good RPGs died after the SNES did. Sure, we still have effort from the western front with things like Fallout, Elder scrolls, fable etc. But JRPGs have completely gone to shit. X-2 was an abomination that was based solely on playing dress up with sailor-moon-esque inbattle loadscreens, and 12 was like playing an MMORPG without other people begging for gold. 11 I didn't even feel the need to play, it ruined its own reputation with me when they said it would be a MMORPG for consoles.
