Improving Sourceop: An open to letter to DF

Regulars who stack onto the rape train are the reason nobody else becomes a regular. You can only get rolled so many times before you find a new home.

That and the regulars who establish some false hierarchy based upon who's been here the longest and therefore has the biggest dick will be the downfall of SourceOP.
You obviously have never talked to sdogg before.

So you are against removing the auto-scramble. Fair enough. The servers will be dead again in four hours. Any solutions on changing that?

Since "stacking" doesn't exist anymore the servers should be stuffed to the brim.

You guys remember me? I'm touched Smile

With the family and everything that has affected me this past time, I have less and less time for TF2.

I'm still on steam though if people need an admin.

More hardware: Can't do it. IP change kills servers. Been over this. People won't care that it's on better hardware and has constant 66 tic because most people just don't understand or notice.

If Valve gives servers SteamIDs and changes favorites to be based on that and not IP addresses, then it could be possible to get hardware similar or better than the hardware running on the valve maps/2fort box.

Bug Valve: Done it. Will see what happens. If I get no response I still have some options.

To be clear, the sprays thing is not "too much server load". It's not what's causing the low server fps. That's purely a CPU problem, but from what I've seen it is what is causing the periodic unresponsiveness (skipping, lag spike, whatever you want to call it). The server FPS is not terrible anyways, it's just not allowing perfect 66 tic which is what any pro/experience/hardcore/serious/whatever player is going to expect.

New admins: Will get on that. You want admin for goldrush? I'll let you call all the shots and we can see what happens.

Whenever I see #1 empty while #2 is populated (or more often recently, vice-versa) I'll jump on the empty server and screw around for awhile waiting for folks to join. More often than not though it's on a not-so popular map, or string of maps, and very few people join (regulars included). And when it actually IS starting to pick up players (speaking of #2) it usually dies quickly when the lag hits, while #1 remains unaffected.

I assume that DF's assessment about Goldrush emptying because it's a hive of scum and villainy is accurate just based on the posting members around here, but think the idea to move the PL maps into the rotation would liven it up.

However, I'll throw in with the rest saying that the top 3 issues regarding #1 and 2 are lag, lack of admins and rotation. It takes (on average) 13 hours to rotate through the maps on #1 and around 4 for #2.

I agree with Ibby here that #2 needs some redecorating as far as the rotation is concerned, and would go so far as to propose the following:
* Canabalize 2Fort No Mods into either
** a CTF server, the same way that it was proposed to change Goldrush into a PL server.
** A true 'pub' server with the 3-4 most "popular" maps and 1-2 flavor of the month custom maps. Customize it with stupid crap like sound effects, ballons on gibs, etc. Also include annoying repeating server text advertising tf2items.com and the other SourceOP servers.
* Turn #2 into a "best of" server as Ibby suggested, but increase the rotation time to ~8 hours total. This means more maps.
* Add more admins of some level from the pool of level headed regulars. E.g. norrisnick. Not saying a legion is required, but a handful with limited power would be appreciated when stupid things happen (for instance when SighCommander and Duplex are on at the same time on #1)
* Add proper channels for Admin complaints and accountability.
**Require demo's when "on duty" (as I said in some other thread) for the admins
**Add a web form for users to submit complaints and demos of admins behaving badly so we don't have flame threads cropping up that devolve into the same people complaining about the same people for no real reason
**On the start of maps or rounds spam the server text letting people know of contact admin (and other features, like how to turn on/off hlxstats, read the motd, etc)

I once wrote what was basically a love letter to DF about these servers 3 years ago when I finally found them. I still think they're the best out there, they just need to continue evolving.

Thanks for jumping on the empty servers.

#1 should be no lag with a high update rate (effective tic), but it wasn't clear if you were referring to #2 or what.

Some of the issues have been touched on some have not. Would it be possible to remove the auto-scramble on the GR server to see if that makes a difference in Server Pop? If it does nothing then its simply the game going down. If it keeps it filled then grats. It seems if server pop went down when that was implemented maybe moving away from that might help, but then I am clearly a rape train bully who simply wants to steamroll people. It has nothing to do with playing with friends.

Giving Sdogg admin is like paying Hitler to keep up the good work. Give it to Takara or something.

It was just an idea... Anyways, scramble is off on Goldrush. Let's see what happens.

Yes, I meant #2 in regards to lag. #1 had it's issues late last year (and still has a random hiccup on extremely rare occasions) but #2 has been not so great at times this month.
