yeah they dont mix men with women when allocating shared rooms. wonder why.
and, OP, from first hand experience, i can tell you that sharing a room can be both the most entertaining and the most irritating experience you could have at university.
i would not recommend sharing a room if you are a very neat and tidy person because as soon as someone else makes a mess it will begin to get on your nerves...its pretty invasive in that sense. but if your a messy person and pretty laid back, i would say go for it, you might have some good times.
just hope you dont get put in with a weirdo like i did first time (tho he dropped out after the first 2 weeks then i ended up sharing with a friend who had a similar first roommate to me

).

This suggests you are coming from outside the US. I would recommend a roommate (regardless of if you are an international student or not), and if dormitories are an option, I would recommend that as well.
Many international students are able to find a network of friends and support faster living on campus, at least from what I have heard. In addition, if the university supports an outreach program, they may have programs in place to formalize a way for you to get to know the community better. At our university, we have professors who volunteer to live in the dorms and university apartments, in addition to other programs. Some professors invite students over for dinner weekly and even welcome them to drop by daily to visit (within reason, of course).

wow that's awesome, yeah I don't think ill be in dorms since I'm 21 (will be a international transfer student) so definitely i will be looking for an apartment as close to the university as possible.
I was suggested to go with a roommate the first year then go alone. if things aren't peachy that is.

in that case a roommate might be nice since you can split the cost of the apartment
