Unbearable lag on 2fort regular - CueBee - Jun 29, 2010

Since about Monday June 28, the lag for many players on 2fort regular has been pretty unbearable. There are frequent dropped packets and more infrequent long spikes of packetloss.

This is my most recent tracert taken at 8:21 CDT June 29.

Tracing route to 208.43.8.175-static.reverse.softlayer.com [208.43.8.175]

Here is a summary from a ping 100.

Ping statistics for 208.43.8.175:
Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 17ms, Maximum = 783ms, Average = 27ms

Even though you see a huge spike in both, neither of these is atypical for me. Generally play is decent with the occasional short lag spike. Since Monday though, lots of regulars have been complaining that the lag makes the game unplayable.

I haven't had any problems that I could notice but I only played for like 2 hours last night.

Unbearable lag on 2fort regular - CueBee - Jun 30, 2010

I took a demo of the lag around 1pm CDT June 30.

lagfuck.dem - 1.29MB

Edit:

The demo is short, but right at the end it shows one of the huge spikes I've been getting since Monday.

When you use a netgraph 4/5 you see a nasty sawtooth lagspike following a fairly large gap from packetloss.

For reference I'm using:

rate 35000
cl_updaterate 60
cl_cmdrate 40
cl_interp 0.01

I'm only having this problem on Sourceop and eGO servers, which are both hosted by Softlayer out of Dallas. Most servers in Chicago and other Midwestern cities are not giving me problems. Our internet connection is more stable than it has been in months. Not sure what to do.

Ill get your demo sent right to the execs of the internets.

Unfortunately some aspects of the net_graph don't really work when playing back a demo (mostly interested in updated in/s and choke/loss) so I can't really tell if it was a network issue or the server just sucking. Either is bad, but I guess it doesn't really matter since it doesn't seem to be an issue any more.

Judging from the sudden increase in var around the same time as the spike I want to say that the server was dropping fps real suddenly, but I've also never seen slow fps do that sort of thing to the net graph (with the gap and then increased packet size following).

Yeah I wish demos would show all the stats of the netgraph, but I wanted to at least give you a visual representation of what was going on.

Edit: This afternoon I got to play for awhile and the lag seems to be mostly gone. The rest I think can be attributed to my normal lag. Maybe it's time to see if our ISP will QoS prioritize our game traffic.

Same kind of lag was back on 208.43.8.175 at around 2pm CDT July 4.

Unplugged from my router and still getting the same kind of long lag spikes. Lots of other people were complaining of the same kind of lag.

Should we blame the steam cloud or the mactards?
