I want to get a new computer. - Adder - May 25, 2010

My budget is 500-550 dollars.

I don't need to run games on super awesome/high/etc... I just want a steady stable framerate on medium/default settings.

What should I get?

Try look around for some special offers in hardware store papers and all, you might get lucky.

You can usualy buy a good net/work computer with good processor power, memory and all but a lacking video card(usualy integrated) with that budget that is easy to fill in with the video card later.

http://www.ibuypower.com/Store/Intel_Core_2_DDR3_Configurator Ibuypower can have good deals at time. I would swap out the ati card unless you like melting video cards. But this is about your price range.

So for around $600 you will have a pretty beefy system with some cash back in rebates. Just add your choice of hard drive and cd drive. I didn't list a video card because the mainboard comes with on-board video. Just use that until you can save for a proper card.

I actually just built this setup and love the case. It is about the size of a toaster oven. I wasn't sure the amount of room I would have had for a video card until the system was built so I was forced to use the onboard video until I could measure and order a proper card. If you can get a video card under 9" you can keep the hard drive cage. Otherwise you need to remove the hard drive cage for a lot more room. But, with the hard drive cage removed you will only have room for 1 hard drive(in the lolfloppy drive mount).
