Been thinking of getting a new lappy, do you guys think its worth getting this for $1500?
17.3-inch 1080p (1920x1080) display with LED backlighting
Intel Core i7-720QM processor (1.6GHz/2.8GHz Turbo Mode, 6MB L3 cache)
ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 graphics card
8GB DDR3-1066 RAM
Two 500GB 7200RPM hard drives
Backlit Keyboard
I'd be looking to keep this for3-4 years.

Seems nice. I could do without the backlit keyboard and would prefer nvidia. How much does it weigh?
Also, where can I learn more about this turbo mode? Is it just rebranded speedstep?

Well, the ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 is the fastest single mobile graphics card available right now.
Backlit Keyboard pic:
Some idea about the turbo mode:
As all Asus gaming notebooks, the G73Jh has a turbo mode that is called Twin Turbo and is supposed to overclock the graphic card as well as the Intel Core i7. Asus even starts with the lower clockrate of 1.6 GHz that is used when all four processor cores are used and increases them.
The G73Jh reaches 12872 points in 3DMark06 with enabled Twin Turbo mode, as opposed to 11990 without Turbo enabled.
It weighs 3.85 kg with the 8-cell battery attached.

Over 8 pounds eh? Ya, I've had a huge 10-15lb alienware for almost 5 years now. I'm over the super graphics on a laptop thing, so I'm looking for something a little more mobile.
If you want graphics though, this looks like a great machine for a great price. I've never owned an asus machine, but have heard nice things and I use asus parts in my own machines.

ASUS is great in terms of quality. ATI mobile cards work pretty well.
google the laptop name + overheating, chances are with all the wattage that thing requires it's going to get very very hot, and if it can't vent very well, it'll just shut down midgame.

If it's static, i.e. it lives on your desk and you don't move it between locations then yeah, it looks like a good machine at a reasonable price. If you're thinking about carrying it around all day, think again. Anything over 3Kg and you'll feel like you're lugging a bag of cement with you wherever you go.
If you are moving about consider a smaller/cheaper refurbished laptop as your roaming laptop and this as your desktop replacement.
