god I fucking hate quake servers... Especially back when i had a shitty internet connection and they put it on orange servers so I was stuck sitting around downloading for like 8 minutes.
Is there really a benefit to people using them? From what I can tell it just makes you hear an annoying voice scream KILLING SPREE and other such useless crap.

It's not just the downloads that are a bad idea. It's pretty annoying when everyone hears every domination, killing spree, double kill, etc.

There's mods for this I believe, to play custom sounds when certain things happen in game for you ThisIsMyCareFace. I remember Sgt. Balls telling how he had for a year or so a sound clip that would play every time someone would get ubered, instead of the regular sound sound it would play "Hammertime!" or some shit, lol.
