New Keyboard; Which Cherry key type should I go for? - Angry_Kittens - May 14, 2013

I've decided to treat myself to a new keyboard now I am nearly 2 weeks away from finishing my degree; I've read a lot of reviews and the keyboard I've decided on is a: Cooler Master Storm Trigger

Of course if anyone else has suggestions on a different keyboard then feel free to mention, I may change my mind. But the main thing I can't decide on is the type of cherry switch to go for. I know black and red are considered the best for gaming, with little to no click and tactile feedback (with red having a slightly lower actuation force requirement than black). But I also do a fair amount of typing and many people consider black and red switches unsuitable for this, so I am also considering brown switches which are the best balance between lightness for gaming and tactile feedback for typing.

So anyone had experience with any of these cherry key switches that can make any recommendations?

A good pair of headphones gets rid of any audio feedback from the switches. I'm using a CM Storm (same keyboard you listed, just without the 10key) with Blues. The clackity-clack is strong, but I don't hear it when gaming with my headphones. Browns would be a good way to go, but really, it's personal preference. See if there's an electronics store somewhere near you with a keyboard display. They'll probably have at least something with Browns and something with Reds or blues to try.

Alright cheers for the advice, not so sure on the electronic store though haha; in the UK high street stores tend to deal with the mass market shit, high end mechanical keyboards I can't picture but I'll definitely check it out.

Yeah, wasn't sure how shops over there were setup, but in the states mass-market retailers like Best Buy even have one or two mechancial keyboards on display, usually targeted at h4rdc0r3 g4m3rz. So, fingers crossed.

Im using a QPAD MK-50 Pro Gaming Mechanical Keyboard with Red MX Switches for my Gaming rig.

Its pretty much the best keyboard i ever had. Very very good for (fps) gaming !!
Typing text works also pretty good after some practice. I can type "very fast" and accurate after 2 month of using this keyboard. But at the beginning i had some problems.

And yeah... red MX switches are kinda loud compared to "normal" keyboards.

Went to a PC World/Currys "Megastore" after work today, they only had 4 gaming keyboards on display, advertised as mechanical but not which switch type. After some googling on my phone I discovered they actually had every type on display (probably more of a fluke, the staff didn't have a clue), blue, brown, black and red. I ruled out blue because it was just too loud and clacky, black felt a bit too stiff. Red felt almost too soft and it was very odd not having tactile feedback on the actuation point, it's probably something I could get used to like you said jonny, brown just felt fairly normal.

So I still haven't really made my mind up P
