Frame Rate Question/Problem - Versed - Feb 24, 2009

I have a general understanding of how things work with Valve games and your ability to run scripts to increase performance.

I'm wondering if anyone (not guessing or just "well I heard from this dude") has any solid information or links that I can read concerning why my frame rates drop so low.

On a server created by me with no one else I average 60-70 FPS.

On the OP servers when populated (out of combat) I get around 20-30.

On the OP server when in combat I get 5-10 FPS.

When I reinstall TF2 and run it at default settings with DX 9 and at medium graphics I get the same frame rates as above.

When I drop to DX 8.1 and run a script that literally makes it look like we're playing Super Mario Bros. I still get the same FPS.

Basically at default settings I get the same frames as I do if I turn them all the way down.

That doesn't make any sense to me at all.

My specs:

Pen 4 3.2 GHz Single
2G of ram dual-chan
30mb HDD (just to hold WindowsXP)
300G HDD holding TF2 and everything else
Nvidia 7300 GT

I don't have the best computer, but it's not that bad.

Obviously I need to upgrade to a new one at some point, but still.

Any information/help would be really appreciated. Thanks!

32 players will definitely bog a system down. Those numbers are definitely comparable to my old P4 system. CPU seems to be the bottleneck for orangebox games.

If you're running with hyperthreading enabled, try turning it off. If it's already off, try turning it on. See which works best for you.

Also, if you're running in windowed mode that will, for some reason, decrease performance. That might apply to Vista only, I forget.

That is because if you have AERO on it will still be processed in the background, and because if the game isn't fullscreen it doesn't have a higher priority on the processor, and if it is your processor bottlenecking you then you will feel it.

Except windowed mode still sucks with aero off.

Do you mean turn off HT for the game or turn off HT in general from BIOS? I don't know how to do it from console.

I turn everything off when I go to play TF2. I also have XP set so that I have max memory allocation to programs instead of background progs.

I'll try it with HT disabled and see. Maybe I should even turn of OC on my CPU.

You shouldn't need to turn off overclocking. That should only be helping unless you are seeing crashes or lockups.

Apparently BIOS is that dirty closet you need to clean more then once a year.

I went in and realized that a few months back (around when I started having problems) I had a crash. BIOS had to reload to default.

It changed my vid card to PCI instead of AGP, set the mem at 64 instead of 256 and had the wrong settings for my CPU.

I fixed it and will see if that helps (also turned off HT) going to see how this plays out.

Now I have a new problem though (which might seem self explanatory) when I boot up now I get this message:

"Pri Master Hard Disk: S.M.A.R.T. Status BAD, Backup and Replace"

I have this 30G HDD from like 10 years ago, I assume it's crapping out now. Any thoughts?
