That is like going down to best buy and asking them for help choosing a tower. Store clerks are rarely very knowledgeable and he wants an outside opinion.

and you dont need to talk to a salesman to see a damn phone. you go in, look at what they've got, and do it yourself

Unlocked phones all work on AT&T but you're going to pay hefty prices for them.
My best advice is to go into walmart or best buy and buy an entry level nokia that does what you need it to. (Cheaper ones with less features are where I went for my disposable phones, as they get 70 days of talk time and eighteen years of standby and I can chuck them squarely at a brick wall and still not scratch the screen)
