The american way is all about money, money and more money, so if you like the server you are on don't be a mooch seems like with todays society everybody feels entitled to a free lunch. If you dont want to be kicked by someone like me who supports what they like then support it too and if it becomes an issue where everybody is paying and there is no room then the folks who have graciously provided you a place to hang will have the financial resources to provide a larger environment (more player spots) or another server all together. Also who should the admins listen to when changes are up? the moochers or the payers, seems the payers have not as much, but a vested interest in the content of the playing environment as the admins do. Just a thought.

you know.... Some people don't have a steady flow of money. Ive donated in the past which is why i have a reserve slot, but i cant donate every month. Cut the poor bastards some slack eh?

The reason ive never tried WoW is becuase of the monthly fee.

I am not trying to flame or start a fight its just that the $10 a month donation that i am willing send is for me a time saver. I work 40 hours a week and am 42 yrs old, i dont have time to fart around looking for a stable cheat/hack free environment to game. I played WoW for 4 years so paying to play is not something i am opposed to especially if what i am getting imho is worth the money. It is unfortunate that we all can't get out of life what we want , when we want it, how we want it, but that is how it is. I donate so that when i get home from work and have poured 3 fingers of single malt in a glass i can get right to it, and once on i dont have to worry about being booted for someone else. It is a fair trade for me 5 hours of entertainment a day (i play from 730am-1230pm est) and only on [valve maps] [no mods] for 10 bucks a month, that is the deal of the century.

Your $10 monthly donations are greatly welcome but they are not required to keep ur reserve slot. In the future it may goto a fee but right now you dont need a montly donation to keep your slot.

While that is all good i will still send my donation this month so that i and anyone else who is interested in a bullshit free zone with cool people to shoot at or with  have a place to come. I expect nothing more than that and not to be kicked once i am on the server Big Grin

I'm not a fan of the server slot arms race myself. We didn't have this in the old days. No offense to DF or any of the other guys that run server operations like this, but there is a lot of people out there that can run servers for free. I could run one myself (*cough* I work in the ISP biz). I ran popular servers for all the quake games. But I don't anymore because nobody plays on them. Why? Because these guys hype the bejesus out of their stuff with the websites, forums, irc, stat pages and what not. Then they come up with these reserved slots and donations to pay for their stuff. Thus begins the demise.

Always someone billowing about the old days  (I've been known to) but like most things, adjustments and minor changes lead to the demise of...nothing.

I've done the server thing myself, back in the day. For those of us who didn't work at the ISP's who wanted to provide a decent play-pin it was expensive and there weren't nearly as many. Times have changed, more players, more money and a much lower barrier of entry.

DF runs a server that's been popular since TF2 went gold (before?). He programs his own admin mod and as far as I know, he is the reason we can play on 32-person servers at all (which he gives away for free).

So while I'm sure DF is soliciting donations to cover costs the value he's providing the community, at large, goes well beyond a few (excellent) game servers (as if that wasn't enough).

Thanks for reminding me to donate.

DF, reserved slot usage is getting out of control. Today at 1 52 EST on a Saturday afternoon all 12 reserved slots were in use, and it's nowhere CLOSE to primetime yet. I've never seen it anywhere near so bad. Reserved slots are starting to not be worth much Sad
