Pyro fire in water is an exploit?
#1

So, I was playing earlier (SourceOp.Com TF2 24/7 2fort [INSTANT RESPAWN], 67.228.59.146:27015, Fri night, July 17, say 9pm to about midnight PST, maybe later), and someone named 3|Gr1ngo says he is going to ban me if I don't stop using the Pyro water exploit (burning people in water when I have flamethrower above water surface).

If this is truly considered an exploit, I am really surprised. I think of exploits as things like floating the intel around (really annoying). If pyro fire in the water is officially considered an exploit by SourceOp I won't do it, but gosh I've had a reserved slot on this server for months (donated twice) and never before heard about this being an exploit or heard anyone complain about it. I've done it plenty (and been burned by others this way plenty, fine by me) just part of the game from my perspective. Some others on the server seemed suprised to hear it was an exploit, but a couple seemed to agree.

I mean there are obvious malicious exploits I've seen (floating intel), and malicious in-game behaviour exploiting "bugs" (clogging the inner spawn doors so they won't open, keeping players from leaving spawn area), but when I'm just out playing the game using the flamethrower the same way any pyro above the water surface can, this seems to in the realm of a very grey area to be considered an exploit and bannable behaviour. It would seem to be the kind of thing Valve would fix if it was not intentional. (Has anyone asked Valve if it is?)

It would be great if there was a list of essentially "normal gameplay" exploits on this site (all exploits perhaps, but I mean especially those someone can be innocently doing without realizing it is considered an exploit or frowned upon by SourceOp). What about flaming people through the bridge floor from under the bridge? I've seen peeps do that and so have tried it myself (fun!). 3|Gr1ngo was not sure if that was considered an exploit. I'd never seen/noticed him before. He said he'd never seen me before.

It would also be great if there was some on-screen indication that a player actually represents SourceOp.

Hope this was ok to post here. My first post, and lots of forums to choose from.

Thanks for the great server and great site.

Truth being told, and this comes from my own personal opinion. I highly dislike people using the flamethrower above the water. It's a very cheap and lame way to kill people, and on top of that, it should be impossible. As far as I can see it, this is a hitbox issue within the models and the flamethrowe is able just to reach the player head hitbox while being underwater. I'm suprised that many people are suprised that this kind of thing wouldn't be considered as an "exploit".

Why? I mean, come on. You can't use the flamethrower under the water, so what makes you think you can use it above the water on people under the water? I myself am considering this an "exploit" or a so called "bug" due to the hitbox problems.

Why is valve not doing anything? Have you ever seen the bug thread on the steam forums? There are TONS of bugs that are there for over 5 months that still hasn't been fixed. Do you actually think that valve would fix every single bug and or exploit? They don't seem to see this as high priority, thus they leave it with this.

And let me show you something else when I'm talking about the bug thread anyway:

Quote from the thread:
Quote:When a Pyro is in water while jumping, the flamethrower can shoot into the water. Players hit will take damage. Also, the flames that are hurting you are bubbles… (Hate this bug Tongue)

Just my 2 cents Smile. And welcome to the forums.

But I've told Skyrider not to ban or punish anyone for doing it.

Agreed 8) Any Pyro with a flare gun should get slapped...

Concerning the flame thrower should not hurt you underwater stuff, um, either gasoline or naplam can reach between 800°C-1300°C. If the temp wasn't remotely near that, it would still burn like hell even if you were a few feet underwater.

Just sayin'.

How about using communication, movement, and situation awareness to avoid such things?
